Should Women Be Allowed In Combat
In the world we live in today, there is a big debate over whether or not women should be allowed to fight in combat. The military believes that this ruling that should happen in these changing times. Even though many people, including top military generals and commanders, believe that women should be allowed to be drafted for the military in combat positions, many people happen to disagree with the statement. Since the Revolutionary War, women have been serving in the army as nurses, chefs, water bearers, and laundresses (Johnson 1). During the first World War, an estimated 12,000 women enlisted in the Navy and Marine Corps, unfortunately around 400 died during the war. If a woman happens to get pregnant while on a combat tour, she will no longer be wanted or needed in the group ( “Women in Combat Pros and Cons” 2). Even women who already have kids are not as helpful to the unit because that makes the men have to worry even more about her staying alive.In human nature, women and men are initially attracted to each other, so with that comes the formation of couples. With all couples around the world, there are problems in the relationship. However if a couple is in a combat unit, the problems that they are having would have to be set aside for the sake of the unit itself. These problems can cause major tensions and jealousy that would either make or break the unit. While this is not a big problem right now, if women were allowed to fight in combat units this could potentially …show more content…
The Marine Corps is highly against women being in combat roles as statistics show. The Marines did a test of 100 women and 300 men to test their physical abilities and strengths. The group shot at targets, dug holes, and practiced pulling the wounded soldiers to safety. At the end of the test, the results showed that the all men units outperformed the all women or mixed gender units (Bowman 1).     Speaking from a woman who is in the military I’m going to elaborate on why I think that women shouldn’t serve in combat positions. It’s scientifically proven that women doesn’t physically perform at the same level as men. For an example, the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is broken down into two categories’, women and men and in which they have different age groups in which women are held to a lower standards than men. The APFT have different requirements when you turn a certain age meaning your body can’t handle as much as it did when you were younger. Same thing with women and men you can’t hold them to the same standard when their body is constructed differently. Physically a woman skeletal system is less dense and prone to have more breakages than a man. Psychological concerns are that women would be place on the front line and then get pregnant to escape from combat. Another reason I think women shouldn’t go into some combat positions such as sniper school is because you have to be aware that they camp out for days, but a woman can’t do that especially if they are on their menstrual cycle.
