In the popular cartoon Spongebob Squarepants, the writers of the show often use satire to express serious problems, through jokes that kids don’t often catch onto. The problem with this, though, is that the episodes that satirize the most important subjects, are often the ones that receive the most backlash. Many of parents believe that although their child won't pick up on the heavy content, those real world problems should not be present in their child's cartoon.…

Nowadays one of most concerning topic in today’s media is sex and violence. Determining what’s “too much” for children is not an easy task, because every parent has their personal preferences about such matters. But determining the actual effects of media violence on children gives rise a problem in itself, as it’s quite tricky to actually determine what “violent media” means to the children (Cutler, 2002). There were many children friendly shows back in the days, shows that taught some useful lessons to the children in a non-violent manner. Shows like Ducktales or Darkwing Duck are examples of such shows that children not only could enjoy, but also learn some…

Many reasons exist for people to favor censorship, both by the government and in schools. These people may feel that internet filters and rating systems insufficiently block obscene material. Some people believe that children exposed to inappropriate material will become promiscuous or will become desensitized by violence on television. Although censorship may be necessary in protecting national security, there is no evidence to support that it protects children, and therefor...…

Children shows are very different from the 90’s and even if they are for a more mature audience they do have similar meanings. Cartoon Network has a symbolism of imagination even now though the shows are based more on story then the underlying message. Nickelodeon is geared more towards social acceptance and learning to deal with everyday life. Finally Disney has always been about family and learning. Through these popular children stations our children learn and grow but are they a bad influence or just misunderstood?…

    Family Guy

Firstly, the language used in the episodes of family guy is a very vulgar, crude, dirty and coarse. They swear a lot for example when Brian talks to Megs friend he says, quote “you know Connie, I think I have a theory about why you’re such a bitch”. If kids watch this on TV by fictional characters they can’t tell that its not the way to talk so they can repeat it at school or even say it to there parents and they do not want their children to talk that way. Also the language they use that discriminates different races, religions and gay people is negative on the children watching this show it gives them the impression that it’s ok, so if in school or at the shopping center they see a person of colour or even if they know a person of different religion they might talk to them and say things that are very inappropriate. For example where the children could get it from, episode two of season eight , the whole episode is about Jewish people, Louis finds out that she and her mother are Jewish and wants to peruse fallowing the Jewish culture but then peter says to her “Jews are gross Lois. It’s the only religion with the word ew in it. And there are also the comments that discriminate against…

Many parents control what their children watch on television, tending to block programs that are inappropriate and disturbing to the child. But do these parents bother to educate themselves on the background of these “inappropriate” shows? I know that when I was a child my mother had just about every show on Adult Swim blocked because of vulgar language and hurtful jokes. For example, Family Guy’s humor could be constructed as offensive (Peacocke, 306) but its intentions are much more beneficial. Antonia…

    Anime vs. Cartoons

    • 325 Words
    • 2 Pages

Anime topics and themes concentrate mostly in life issues or things tied closer to human emotions. Japanese animators tend to add the sense of realism in Anime. This is done by animating how water flows, how fire burns wood, and how tears manage to fall from someone’s eyes. These characteristics are what make Anime much appealing to most audiences. On the other hand, Cartoons are generally made to make people laugh, that’s why most cartoon characters are somewhat disproportional, colorful, and comical. Cartoon character traits are far from reality. They are works of imagination which are humorous. However, Cartoons lack the sense of realism. For example, when a Cartoon character cries, it isn’t that effective to audiences because of the way the tears are coming from the character’s eyes. Furthermore, whatever emotion should you try to incorporate with a Cartoon character, it will still be funny.…

Violence has become a major part of television shows increasing regularly. Many may think that it is only the shows that get the warning “viewer discretion is advised” are bad influences on people but I believe that all shows can have a negative influence. For example, in the 90’s cartoon show Spiderman, all he ever did was tie villains up with his webs. In today’s cartoon he hits them and draws blood when fighting the villains. As innocent as cartoon shows may seem I have seen the increase in violence in these shows. Children, especially young, are not ready to distinguish right from wrong so when their favorite action hero is beating up a bad guy, therefore kids get the impression that it is all right to do the same. Witnessing repeated violent acts can lead to desensitization and lack of empathy for human…
