Who Is Responsible For The Downfall Of Macbeth
The play starts off in medieval Scotland; three witches appear revealing traditions that could be associated with witchcraft: they know in advance that the outcome of a civil war that is being fought in Scotland will involve Macbeth. Macbeth is first introduced into the play as a noble gentleman, ready to fight for his land and to do anything for his country. As the play goes on, his ambitions are made clear to the audience through his speech and soliloquys. The witches gather in a bleak place, they have announced that a spell has been prepared for Macbeth. The witches tell Macbeth that he will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland. Macbeth believes that the witches’ prophecies will become true because the first of the prophecies’ is true – the death of his father has made him Thane of Glamis. Although the witches have placed the idea of these three prophecies in Macbeths mind, it is himself who carries out the unexpected actions soon that would soon be revealed. Macbeth feels that after he has committed the first murder of Duncan, there is nothing to prevent him from committing even more horrific crimes as the play goes on. The witches did not clearly explain to Macbeth what had to do in order to complete the three prophecies, only set out the three basic outcomes he could be capable of. Macbeth was the instigator of all actions he would complete during the play, causing him to bring himself down. Throughout the play, Macbeth is a character who shows extreme bravery. The reader can see his bravery through his efforts and victories on the battle field. Macbeth is a brave and good hearted man, who unfortunately possesses a weak mind, which allows his ambition and the persuasion of his wife to lead him down the wrong
