What STEM Field Interests You The Most
What STEM field interests you most? Describe the experiences that have shaped your interests and any action steps you have taken to explore them further
One day or another, STEM is going to save the world. As society evolves, STEM continues to be a leader in growth and innovation. I believe that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics will help to solve the world’s most urgent issues such as Global Warming and Overpopulation. All of these problems are caused by the environment and organisms, so the solutions should come from them. The STEM field that interests me most and works towards solving such problems is biotechnology which “harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet” (Bio).
The experiences that have shaped my interests range from online experiments to hands-on activities. The first time I heard about biotechnology was in my 8th grade Earth and Environmental Science class. My teacher told the class about how biotechnology was used to create bacteria that ate oil and that reduced the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Before that class, I never knew that one could manipulate organisms to act in certain ways. That

Such science camps definitely opened my eyes to the limitless amount of possibilities in STEM. One experience that really stuck with me was an experiment conducted in the microbiology camp. Everyone in the class went out to the school’s backfield and picked a component of life to sample bacteria from. Some chose leafs and dirt, while others chose unsuspecting grasshoppers and ladybugs. I, on the other hand, chose to collect bacteria from a small lavender flower. Throughout the remaining days of camp, we grew our sample bacteria on various petris dishes simulating different environments. I was amazed that certain bacteria grew in even the harshest

A Petri plate containing nutrient agar was used in the experiment. A sharpie was used to section off four quadrants of the dish for the different bacteria. Cotton swabs were used to sample different areas of the building. Cotton swabs used by me and my lab partner were used to test areas from the hallway water fountain, vending machine, hallway floor, and the door handle to enter the classroom. Once done with this process, the cotton swabs were swiped on the four different quadrants of the Petri plate, covered and sealed, and set aside for a week to let the bacteria grow on the agar.…

The purpose of the unknown bacteria lab assignment was to select an unknown bacteria culture and, through a series of metabolic tests, identify which bacteria genus resided in the pure culture received. A nutrient broth inoculated with bacterial culture (numbered 45, henceforth referenced as U45) was selected and a streak plate was made to isolate a pure culture for use throughout the assignment.…

Biotechnology, at its simplest is technology based on biology – it employs the use of cellular and bimolecular processes to develop products and technologies. The variety of living cells used for their biochemical talents range from simple singled-cells bacteria and yeast to complex multi-cellular organisms, such as plants and humans. Over the years, biotechnology has been a rapidly developing area of science that seeks to improve living conditions for all people across the world. Although the word biotechnology carries modern connotations, humans have used biological processes involving microorganisms for thousands of years in aiding the production of food products. A few of the most prominent and areas of science that utilises biotechnology are; cloning, IVF and stem cell research.…

The teachers and the labs there catalyzed my fascination with chemistry, and I wanted to give back by sharing the experiences I had with others. Though, I was immediately rejected by Ben’s disgust with DNA, I eventually sparked an interest for chemistry in him and my other little scientists. By the end of the camp, they had actually researched, on their own time, how certain chemicals affect the body, and they told me some things I didn’t even know! That’s when I realized that my actions sparked their sudden fascination with chemistry, and more importantly their excitement to…

One STEM activity that I absolutely love and that makes me smile is Seaperch. Seaperch is an innovative underwater robotics program where we build ROVs and enter them into competitions where we test their speed and quality. The program also teaches a lot of basic science and social skills. This program is really fun for me because I get to build a robot and see how I can fix it and make it better it teaches me social skills because when we have our interviews I have to socialize and I learn basic science, I learn more about density and buoyancy. I can make a living out if this program if I put all my effort in because they give out a lot of scholarships and for me to have a good future I need to get a few. A few careers that are STEM and interest…

Myself being a black female seeking to pursue multiple degrees in this field sets me apart from others. By pursuing a degree in the field of STEM, I have plans to use my knowledge to serve. The knowledge that I acquire through The Bayer School Scholars Program will aid me in my future goals in the development and advocacy of green living. I would like to dedicate my research to environmental studies to improve the way of life for people in and out of the United States through green living. Along with my degree in biochemistry or environmental sciences I plan to acquire a degree in engineering also so I can develop revolutionary technologies that will help our environment and the organisms living in it. I believe that Duquesne University is the perfect place for me to dive into my ambitious aspirations. The diversity that Duquesne offers provides an ideal foundation for such a task, which requires the perfect balance of innovation, brilliance, creativity and…

As a sophomore, I was one of the youngest participants in the program as most of the other participants were juniors. The selection process was rigorous. I had to write two admission essays, submit my high school transcripts and obtain a letter of recommendation from one of my Science teachers. Fortunately, I was one of thirty participants accepted to the program out of over 165 applicants. This is a nationwide program and there were students from all over the United States attending camp with me. I had an awesome experience actually living on campus and touring the many science facilities on the Texas A&M University campus. Not to mention the hands-on engineering experience I received from the various projects we worked on during the camp. This was truly an experience I will never…

I would apply my STEM experience into my career and College because I want to do Technology engineering. I would love this opportunity because I can learn new things and can get me a chance to see what I interested in. I would talk to other people on how STEM works and what it really stands for “Science,Technology,Engineering, and Mathematical.” The key things that STEM does do is make you is a problem solver, make you do analysis thinking, and the ability to work independently. I can really gain from STEM because I love technology and engineering I want to learn so much more there so much of things I can learn how to build it, make me do difficult things that challenges me and keep me on my feet.…
