What Makes a True Friend?
What Makes a True Friend

In my life, there have been so many friends that have touched me, changed me and supported me. But once in a while someone comes along and stands out above the rest because of their unfailing loyalty, much-needed humor and true kindness. Her name is Vicki and she entered my life only a few years ago. In that time, I have come to know her and have found that she is just that kind of friend.

Vicki has always proven herself to be very loyal. A few years ago, we were both working on a project with other team members. We were under pressure to finish and of course tempers flared in the group. I left the room to go make copies for the project binder. When I came back, people were very quiet and no one would make eye contact with me except Vicki. I just knew something was up. Later on, I asked her if “something” happened while I was gone. It turned out that one of my so-called “friends” began to talk about me behind my back. Vicki chose to stick up for me and say something in my defense while the others just sat silent. It’s awful hard to do that in a large group of women but she did because loyalty matters to her.

Being funny at just the right moment is another great thing about Vicki. Her humor is quick and witty! She’s not a big talker so she listens well. This is how she knows when you need to laugh. I remember a tough time in my life with both work and home. One afternoon, I was very upset about something and I couldn’t see a way out of it. Vicki looked at me with that devious look in her eyes and came up with a quick little comment—some real poetic justice that made me laugh before my tears came and turned my day around. That’s the humor I needed and she knew it.

But Vicki’s kindness is what really draws you to her. Throughout the years she has shown me such kindness, whether she shared food, plans, money, personal details and even giving me thoughtful gifts for no reason at all.

My best friend Sedona Love taught me something this year, something I would never have had seen with my own two eyes until she showed me. She taught me that when I am having trouble at home or life isn’t treating me so well, that she will always be there to listen and give their best input. She may sometimes be sarcastic, silly, goofy, mean, crazy, sometimes plain out embarrassing, and even care too much, but in the long run she is always going to be there to listen and not talk, hear without judging, and be there with nothing in return. In class sometimes she can be pretty critical but I know that’s just how our relationship works. I may get called silly, stupid, a dumb blonde, an idiot, but when I need my best friend the most I know that she will be there for me. When I needed a shoulder to cry on or when I needed a hug the most she was always there for me, when I felt there was no sense in life she showed me there was way more to life than I thought. A couple of weeks ago I went into severe anaphylactic shock and she was right there, she brought me my backpack and the things I needed most at the time. She stood up for me when my so called friends were talking behind my back not really knowing what was going on. She was also the only one who cared enough to call me and see how I was doing, she put everything aside just so she could make sure that I was okay. Not…

Then, perhaps, there is that one person who is as close to you as a brother or sister or perhaps, as the Bible says, “is a friend that sticks closer than a brother” (Prov. 18:24), someone in whom you can confide and trust, and with whom you can share your hopes and dreams. A friend who is there not only through the good times, but also the bad—through thick and thin—someone who won’t desert you when the going gets tough.…

Sometimes it is not as easy to see someone’s differences, especially when they are internal. Another friend of mine has a cheery, positive attitude in school. Despite her bubbly outward appearance, one day I could see that something was wrong. I know that it is hard to talk about things that are going wrong, so instead of asking her about it, I just offered her support and friendship. Later, she opened up to me that she was going through a tough time as her parents were getting divorced. She appreciated my friendship and now we have become better friends with a greater level of trust.…
