When I am asked about my ethnic backgrounds I have always said Spanish. You couldn't tell this by looking at me but my Dad's side of the family is Spanish and Navajo mixed and my Mom's side is from all over the place and mainly from Texas. I get my looks from her because they are all light skinned and light eyes but I really identify with my Dad's side of the family. I would say that I consider myself a "typical" American, I would imagine that we all can. The United States is great because of all the diversity, with so many different people who consider themselves American I think its hard to say there is even a "typical" looking American.

Well I am half white and half black. I personally do not consider or identify myself as being either black or white. I guess I just let everyone else decide that for me because it doesn’t matter to me at all. Because of my skin color people consider me to be black, however my friends joke and say that I am the whitest black man they have ever met, and that comes from both my white and black friends. I would consider myself to be a typical American on the simple fact that America is the melting pot of the world and I would be considered prime example of that with everything that I am mixed with. Throughout most of U.S. history, in most locations, the majority race has been White/Caucasian according to the (US Census) 72% of the population were White, the ancestry is primarily of European decent including Germany, Ireland, England, Italy, Scandinavia, and Poland, with some in the Middle East and North Africa. The highest population of the White race is in the Midwestern states. I believe that the longer your ancestors live in America the degree of mixed heritage, will become increased, because of interracial marriages, and births. Some of the larger races in US history are Native Americans, until the White settlers moved into the area in the 15th Century. Hispanic/Latino is of no particular race their ancestry is of Latin America, this race in the US was around the 15th Century, Asian and Pacific Islanders are of Far East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific Islands. Several laws were in place that specifically singled out certain Ethnic groups, some examples, (Jim Crow laws) primarily targeted Blacks. (The Civil Rights amendment) put an end to the 100-year law. (The Page Act of 1875) targeted the Asian race.…

Biracial, Multiracial, What are you? Who are you? What do you have in you? It is quite difficult labeling me as a black African female; I’d imagine it is much more complex to define who you are when your heritage is comprised of many different cultures. How does one define who they are when this is the case? Does one embrace one culture and deny another? As the President of the United States does Barack Obama deny his one culture to give African Americans that point that we need for overcoming yet another hurdle of adversity? Does Tiger Woods the famous golf player embrace his own cultures or does he chose to say I’m black and I’m proud? As a biracial child whom should they embrace, whom should they deny?…

Being American doesn’t depend on one’s ethnicity anyone can classify themselves as an American, even if other people don’t see it that way. In Kesaya E. Noda’s “Growing up Asian in America” she explains that her identity was challenged when she says, “Sometimes when I was growing up, my identity seem to hurtle towards me and paste itself right to my face. I felt that way, encountering the stereotypes of my race perpetuated by non-Japanese people (primarily white) who may or may not have had contact with other Japanese in America”(Kesaya 32). In other words, the author showed us how she…

Samuel, I really enjoyed your post as I like hearing about other people’s family history since mine is so diverse. With your skin tone, eyes, and hair I can see why someone may say you look Hispanic. At least you take it in stride. Today, too many people get offended when someone calls them the wrong race or ethnic origin. It is really good that you continue your family’s tradition of cooking Greek and Italian dishes and I hope your children continue that. My family has been in this country so long and has so many nationalities in the mix that we have Southern traditions instead of a specific country. I do enjoy researching my family’s history. I do not have anyone famous in my family so far, but my great-great grandfather, Private John Henry Gwathney, did manage to survive the Civil War while serving under General Nathan Bedford Forrest.…

If you were to ask me what is my ethnicity and race I will tell you I am an American who speaks Spanish, has funny has it may sound but it’s the truth. In Puerto Rico skin color and other physical characteristics are used by people on the island of Puerto Rico to identify themselves when it comes to races. For instance the times I’ve traveled to Puerto Rico, I would hear terms such as trigeo, blanco and Moreno, in English, is caramel colored skin, light skinned and dark skinned, so there is so many ways for indentity. I live with the “Your Puerto Rican? A question everyone should ask themselves is, “Have I ever presented a prejudicial attitude to a different race or group of people?” Prejudicial is a negative attitude toward an entire group category of people as mentioned in the “Racial and Ethnic Groups textbook” by Richard T. Schaefer. Every race and ethnicity are raised from their individual, culture and believes, therefore the lifestyle and future will be different growing up. I have the privilege of being born in The United States of America and can be characterized by my Mexican family which can be related to a social class.…

All the time I get asked, “What are you?” To quickly get it over with I always “round” my ethnicities. I simply say “ I’m half Chinese and half white,” but I am so much more. I am 44% Chinese, 4% Pacific Islander, 2% Central Asian, 12.5% Norwegian, 12.5% German, 12.5% Swedish, 6.25% Irish, and 6.25% Swiss German; I am proud to be all of those. However, because of my mixed background, I do not look the part of either side of my family. My siblings and I stand out because my parents have the only mixed family out of their brothers and sisters, but I still can and choose to identify with both sides.…
