Being An American Citizen

A question everyone should ask themselves is, “Have I ever presented a prejudicial attitude to a different race or group of people?” Prejudicial is a negative attitude toward an entire group category of people as mentioned in the “Racial and Ethnic Groups textbook” by Richard T. Schaefer. Every race and ethnicity are raised from their individual, culture and believes, therefore the lifestyle and future will be different growing up. I have the privilege of being born in The United States of America and can be characterized by my Mexican family which can be related to a social class.

Having the opportunity to be educated and having the resources to be successful in life will difference me with my Mexican family whom make the decision to come to this country to better themselves. Working full time and having time to participate English classes is the first step my Mexican family takes to learn the English language. Because I had the privilege to be able to grow up learning the English language I have more opportunities to find better jobs, advance academically, and be able to communicate more comfortably with people. Also, because my knowledge and skills I am viewed by my family to do better in life. Therefore, in comparison by my family to be in different social class. Even though, I am an American, a white person may categorize themselves to be in a different social class and dominant in comparison to my skin color and subordinate group. Older adults sometimes may drive, walk or speak slower and as an adult we should be able to recognize that it should not bother us but instead help them. But other people may not think the same and sometimes instead of taking care of who care for them once they send them to Senior Holmes for others to care for them. Which in some cases it is recommended because of the physical or medical attention older adults may need, but if all they need is a ride or to be cooked for, I believe it is unnecessary. Therefore, if older adults are being stereotyped because they move slower than the younger adults, people with disabilities are viewed differently by people who are obviously not educated to understand. People with disabilities are viewed differently because of their physical characteristics such as, blindness, mobility, etc. People that are not educated or know someone with physical disabilities will not understand unless they attempt to recognize it. For example, how many people will help a man or women in a wheelchair who is attempting to carry their groceries? Instead others will just stare and stereotype until the person in the wheelchair is out of sight. This situation seems un-human but these cases do occur in our daily life.
