Upward Bound Research Paper
Being a leader is a big responsibility. Being a leader means you put others needs before yours, everything you do benefits others. Leadership is the ability to help people achieve things they don't think are possible. I don’t consider myself a leader yet but I do believe I’m on the correct pathway towards it and I’m close to achieving it. Being part of the program Upward Bound has mold me to being closer to a becoming a leader. I would like to be a student ambassador because being part of the RGV LEAD organization would mean a new learning experience and opportunity. Being part of this organization would be an honor because I know this is a big opportunity, not only for me but for my future.

Throughout my high school years, I maintained various leadership roles. The first of which was serving as a section leader in the marching band for three years. As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

I should be a member of Florida Leadership Academy because I am a driven person who wants to break down the barriers that others have placed. Almost two years ago, I finally received that news I have hoping to receive for years, I was going to be a United States Senate Page. To most people who hear the title of the position, most people have a preconceived notion that my parents contacted a couple of people to help me out, but that was not the case. Before I received the news, I had spent three years calling people in Washington, D.C. trying to convince them that I was the best candidate for the position. Most of the time, they would often say that I had no chance since my parents were apolitical and that the Senator does not normally select students for program. Knowing that the odds were against me, I still proceeded to email the Senator’s staff every month reminding them who I was and to not overlook me when decisions were made. At certain points, I felt I was fighting a nonexistent fight, but with the drive I had, I persevered onward and was fortunate enough to have been appointed to serve the United States Senate an honor very few students had, especially with my background.…

A self-employed business man once said, “The best example of leadership is leading by example” (Jerry McClain). He describes a true leader, a pioneer whose morals and selflessness guide her to guide others. She is an inspiration, and a beacon of hope for all to follow. I share this passion for helping and guiding by example, and as a member of the National Junior Honor Society, I would seek to better the community just as I do every day inside and outside of the classroom.…

I sit thinking were would this ticket take me. Last year my Upward Bound Program took most of the students including me to Missouri and there I learned about Study Abroad. I’ve always known from then on that I wanted to study abroad even if I didn’t know all to know about the requirements to be considered. There are some many beautiful places around the world, but time is short and I have to choose one place to go. I look at my ticket one last time and think to myself “this is going to be the best time of my life”.…

There are many reasons why I want to become an Auror leader, my number one reason is because I frankly feel that my experience in Ursa changed me as a person and I want to continue the personal growth that Aurora has started while helping new students experience the same growth that I did. I have always been dedicated to helping those who are younger than myself. In high school I was on the track team and one of my favorite things to do was to mentor the first year athletes. By doing this I would show my younger teammates correct technique, and how to prepare for meets physically as well as mentally. Now that I am in college I love to help kids from my highschool who are interested in Penn State. I show them around campus, and I gave them…

I continued to build on this by becoming a student ambassador, where I spend either 4 hours or even the entire night with a prospective student, showing them the campus and all of the glorious opportunities here. As a result of this personal growth, I was privileged to be selected as one of the inaugural shift leaders at Alumni Gym. I am now one of the point-men for any questions or concerns relating to the gym. By becoming an RA I hope to continue this personal growth, becoming more and more well-versed and meeting more and more people on Union’s campus. Additionally, I will be gaining critical skills that I believe will enable me to be successful in life particularly being a leader around students that are either my age or not much older or younger. I anticipate many issues, especially relating to having to be the smart person when my peers are being unintelligent and ensuring the safety of everyone else in my building and around campus. However, in order to grow, one must be faced with challenges, and it is how that individual confronts those challenges that determine how that individual will grow. The leadership opportunity that the RA position provides not only will provide me with immense growth, but will allow me to…

In order to become the leader that is expected of me I must increase my motivational skills to help myself as well as others. The contributions that I will be able to make to society will be reward enough because that will create an atmosphere where my peers can motivate themselves. The characteristics wish to increase are my listening skills, a more positive attitude and outlook on things, better communication which will result in better execution of my ideas. A great leader is on who is able to properly share their vision and eagerly share their knowledge. It will not be a walk in the park to get where I need to be in life but with the drive and readiness to work and communicate well with my classmates, professors, and community as a whole I can deliver.…

I lead for the feeling of every student on my campus becoming one, so perfectly matched in school spirit and school pride. I lead to feel the rush of my heart every time I see a sea of orange and hear the deafening cheer of the crowd. I lead because it isn't easy to get thousands in a school involved I lead for the challenge to fill the stands at every rally fill and to fill every seat at any blood drive. I am a leader in ASB to get my message across so know I left a legend when I turn to leave for college. I not only lead for myself, but for my fellow students as well, my family and my equals.…

Last year, part of the group and I went to a leadership conference. The leadership conference also helped me look a leadership in a different way. The speakers taught me what it takes to be a great leader. During the conference I learned that every leader has six characteristics and they are resilience, flexibility, communication, courage, humility and presence, and responsibility. I feel that I have almost all of those characteristics and that if the National Honor Society makes these characteristics its main focus, we can accomplish anything we face. If I were accepted into National Honor Society, I would try my best to be one of the best leaders in our school because we need great leaders. Also, I would pour my heart and soul into this group because I care for everyone in the school, and whenever I see anyone struggling, I try my best to help that person and that situation, without causing even more problems for that person. In addition, I would put the other student’s needs in front of my own because that was great leaders do. I would try my best to get involved with my community and the people in it. I would try to start service projects to further our…

Ever since I was young, I have fought against stereotypes. Definitionally, it means “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing,” however it has impacted me much more. From childhood to now, several stereotypes (spoken and unspoken) have been placed on me. Not only has this affected my emotions, I have formed my perspective of life around it. But it doesn’t stop there. I learned how to fight against these stereotypes and even how to embrace them in certain circumstances.…

When I was in school I took a test, which gave me suggestions on what I should do in life as an adult. I believe that the test that I took influenced my personality, and the type of attitude that I had in time of conflict, and situations. Each suggestion that I was given would have me to be a leader. I believe that in order to lead, a leader must have walked were other are trying to go. Leaders have the challenge of serving those employees, or students who they lead. My goal as a leader is to encourage people to better his or herself by making, wise and structured decisions in life. Decisions that we make today affect the paths of our future. Every person has the power to identify his or her strengths and…

To be an ambassador for President University means a lot to me; representing a respectable institution which I am a part of to the general public, especially to eager high school seniors in my own hometown, sharing how it feels like to study here and live amongst the multicultural environment in the dormitory where I found a new family far from home. I’m lucky to be here right now, on my way to be tomorrow’s leader, and I want my juniors to be able to have the same experience—something which I believe is achievable by being an ambassador for President University.…

But, I’m only going to go into detail on one. I was an emerging leader, and it was a class that you apply to take when you’re going into your sophomore year, and was aimed at bringing together a diverse array of leaders from all types of organizations on campus. The class was directed by my school’s head of the Center for Leadership & Service department and she certainly is great at her job. Every class was different and unique. Some were aimed at a different way to look at the world, those around you, the way others think, the way others are treated in society, and a wide array of popular leadership theories and insights into how to inspire others and yourself. I still remember what my class came up as our definition of what leadership is to us and it still applies to me today. It was, “Leadership is a continuous developmental process towards the growth of oneself and those around them.” I like the idea of trying to have the mentality of always choosing the positive option in life. This, and the other leadership experience’s I have had are some of the few experiences that I have walked away truly feeling like I grew as a person, taking away with me both new knowledge and leadership skills that will dramatically help me handle the daily struggles that the professional world offers. The leadership programs I attended set a catalyst to my interest in people…
