Outcome 1 – Understand how to plan and provide environments and services that support children and young people’s health and safety
1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and service

When working with children and before making plans for activities you have to be aware of doing risk assessments, ensuring the environment is free from hazards and take into account the H&S requirements of all pupils. Factors which should be considered when planning H&S indoor or outdoor environment and service should be:

Staff pupil ratio (under 5’s)
Individual needs of the child
Suitable environment; class temperature, whether it’s wet and slippery outside When planning for a healthy and safe indoor environment firstly rooms should be organised to optimise safety, by ensuring there is adequate space in relation to the number of pupils who will be using it. This allows the children to move around easily and comfortable.
Light – Classroom where possible should have access to as much natural light as possible, to ensure that children can work in comfort. If this is not possible then alternative light source should be provided.
Noise – The level off noise taken around the classroom should be taken into consideration, as this can be distracting and cause the work area to be unsuitable.
Individuals – Specific risk to individuals should be considered; these may include disabilities, sensory impairments and pregnancy. This will all impact the way we think and plan about our environment, in case of wheelchair user the whole layout of the room will have to change so they can manoeuvre around easily without posing risk to themselves or others.
Organisation: All equipment should be stored and packed neatly and not cause a hazard. All storage should be clearly labelled.
