CYP Core 3.4: Support children and young people’s health and safety.

1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services.
There are a variety of factors to consider when planning health and safety in your setting. The individual needs of each child, taking into account their age and abilities are important as are the specific risks due to impairment or the possibility of pregnancy in carers.
You must consider the function of the environment the children use and what the outcomes you require for using those areas. We must also take into account our duty of care and ensure that responsibility and accountability are recognised and considered to ensure there are no unnecessary risks.

1.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safety.
Health and safety of our children, staff members and family or visitors are a high priority for our setting. Wehahave policy
We have policies and procedures set in place for all our activities and environments and ensure that we follow these when using these areas. If there are changes to these areas then we implement a new procedure to ensure it will not cause any unnecessary risks. If a child or staff member comes into the setting who may have a disability or impairment then we will reassess our setting to ensure that the individual is not put at risk. All staff members consult our policies and procedures on a regular basis to ensure we are fully up to date with all the possible hazards that we may deal with and these procedures also advise us on how to deal with any hazard in a way that will reduce risk to any individual who may be involved. If a hazard does occur then staff will immediately inform the other staff members verbally about what has occurred and then ensure it is dealt with according to our policies and procedures.

At our setting for example, if it was to be decided that our outdoor activity for the day was to be driving the push along cars and the push bikes. First of all someone would go and check that there are no obstacles such as debris and other play equipment in the area to be used in order to prevent any risk of accidents, also to check that the cars and bikes are in good working order and are safe for the children to use. These risk assessments are carried out on a daily basis for the safety of the children in our care. Our outside play area is enclosed with a wooden wall fence with a single 2meter gate to access it, which is always kept closed whether the children are in the play area or not. With this safely enclosed outside area the children are free to explore and play. Once we are ready to go out, the register is put into our first aid bag and taken outdoors with us. We take our register with us in case there was a fire then we can be sure of the attendance of children in our care on that particular day. The first aid bag is handy for any accidents that can be dealt with on site. When the children are outside, the ones that need assistance are helped into the cars or on bikes, or shown how to operate the equipment taking into account that every child is an individual with their own needs. Some children could be at the potty training stage or be using the toilet, so it is important that the toilets are checked for cleanliness and…

Health and safety is monitored and maintained by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks. When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. When children arrive at the setting safety gates must be in place before children attended so that no children can leave the setting. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding. When wearing personal protective equipment we stop the spread of germs and cross contamination to anyone else. If any member of staff notices that personal protective equipment is getting low on stock that member of staff should inform the manager so more personal protective equipment can be ordered. DBS checks should be carried out before anyone is to start working in the setting because safeguarding is a major issue when working with children and is the duty of the setting manager to ensure that all members of staff hold a…
