Unit 027 Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety
Outcome 1 Understand how to plan and provide environments and services that support children and young people’s health and safety
1. Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services

Factors to take into account include:
Every child is an individual –children of different ages, abilities and needs require planning for differently and activities differentiating depending on ability and needs. If you are setting a room up for young children you need to be aware of children’s movement abilities I.E. crawling, walking, running abilities, balance and spatial awareness abilities. However if setting up a room for older children, these may be less taken into account.
Specific needs – we have a child with mobility problems, who uses a walker to move around, thus when setting up the room we take this into account by using the walker to ensure he has enough space between furniture and that he can assess all areas and can move around safely and independently, (this also aides his social interactions with other children). In an older child’s classroom we have a child with hearing difficulties, in that class we ensure she can sit near the front of the class and that the classroom does not echo.
Needs of families and carers -
Function and purpose of environment – the different areas of our school are set up differently depending on which class/ age group are using them, for example our 2 year old provision has small chairs for their size and bookshelves and furniture are at their height to enable easy access. However in each other classroom we have chairs suitable for their ages.
Duty of care – child safety and welfare should always be the first step of planning an area or activity.
Outcomes for the children –aims, objectives and outcomes have to be the area first investigated when organising and planning activities these should be
