Unit 201 – Manage own performance in a business environment

Planning work and being accountable to others
(1.1-1.10)
The purpose of guidelines and procedures is so that I know what has to be done and how it has to be done. Then there is no chance of me going wrong and making mistakes. The purpose of this Code of Practice is to establish clear and mutual expectations. This helps to minimise the risks and problems of personal difficulties, problems with supervision, or bad performance.

Planning keeps me organised and also helps me estimate how much time work will take.

The advantages of planning:

❖ Planning gives a rough estimate of the time required for completion of the actions and defines the actions that one will be performing.

❖ It helps to be ready to face emergencies.

❖ It helps you to be organised on a day to day, weekly and monthly basis.

❖ Planning helps avoid duplication of labour.

I always write work and jobs down on a to-do list - Writing down everything has two purposes.

❖ Firstly, I am planning your job and the tools I need.

❖ Secondly, I am making a written account of my job for others to see.

Then, if I am asked what I have done at any time, I can show it to them and be accountable for work I’ve done or been doing.

It is important to agree realistic targets to get the jobs done on time, other wise it will have a bad remark on your work ethics. It is always good to plan for extra time, rather than tight timeframes, because quality in work is very important.

Ways to agree realistic targets are:

1. Planning and preparation: Have clear cut objectives and stay by them. Collect all the information needed to complete the task even before starting the task.

2. Discussion: It is worth having a discussion with experiences staff or seniors to get advice on whether your plan or assumption about a plan is good enough to complete the task perfectly.

3. Review and propose: Explain

In the survey, question six asked about my planning skills and according to the results two ranked my ability to plan as very good and the other two as good. Even though I view this as a strength I possess, following my mentor’s advice, there is still some room for improvement. Her suggestion was that I should force myself to plan even if I don’t want to and by doing this it helps reduce stress by planning ahead. With this being done consistently, it will eventually become a part of my ritual and the skill will be extended to other things I choose to do in…

Planning is one of the most important project management and time management techniques. Planning is preparing a sequence of action steps to achieve some specific goal. If a person does it effectively, he can reduce much the necessary time and effort of achieving the goal. A plan is like a map. When following a plan, he can always see how much he have progressed towards his project goal and how far he is from his destination. The word planning incorporates both ideas: It means determining the organization's goals and defining the means for achieving them. Planning allows managers the opportunity to adjust to the environment instead of merely reacting to it. Planning increases the possibility of survival in business by actively anticipating and managing the risks that may occur in the future.…
