Unit 027: Support children and young people’s health and safety

Outcome 1: Understand how to plan and provide environments and services that support children and young people’s health and safety

Describe the factors you have to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services
When planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments or activities with children and young people you must take into consideration these principles: * The age and ability of the children * Equipment and activity is age appropriate e.g. you wouldn’t do a lego activity with a baby who would want to put the small bits in their mouth * Whether children have any specific needs such as sensory impairments * The different needs of families and carers * Is it safe? Has a risk assessment been conducted? * Duty of care – when planning the child’s safety and welfare should be of most importance * That policies and procedures are being followed * Staff ratios are correct * There is a first aider present * The desired outcomes of the child or young person are the starting point * There are clear aims and objectives that are based around the required outcomes for their age according to the EYFS * Lines of responsibility and accountability

Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely in your work setting
In my setting we have a health and safety policy and procedure which is shown to staff members on their induction at the nursery via a video and following questions, and supervised to ensure this is being carried out.
In the policy it states that “We believe the risks in the nursery environment to be low and we will maintain maximum protection for children, staff and parents. The nursery will: * Ensure all entrances and exits from the building, including fire exits, remain clear at all times

    When providing a healthy and safe environment both inside and outside the nursery, there are factors myself and other practitioners need to consider; individual children and any specific needs they may have, for example at my work place we a baby with Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes restricted growth, poor core muscle strength, learning difficulties, behavioural problems such as temper tantrums or stubbornness and a permanent feeling of hunger which will start between the age of 2 and 8 years old.     The safety and welfare of the children is very important in every setting as indicated in section 3 of the statutory framework for the early year’s foundation stage 2014. All providers must meet the necessary requirements to make sure the children are kept safe and well. In my setting we have three rooms which are the baby room, toddler room and pre-school. As I work in the toddler room I care for children age ranging between 16 months to 27months old. The children to staff ratio is very important as this ensures that the children’s needs and safety is met. If the children are under two years old then we have a staff ratio of 1 adult to 3 children and if the children are over 2 years old then we have a staff ratio of 1 adult to 4 children. Childcare Act 2004 the EYFS have welfare and learning and development requirements which must be followed by all childcare providers to ensure a safe and secure environment is provided by all settings and childcare providers. Food Hygiene Legislation 2006, this act is in regards to the safe storage, handling and preparation of food, which included a number of routine checks that have to be followed to avoid any server health hazards.     1) When planning for young people you need to take several factors into account to make sure the environment and services are safe. The first factor is the individual needs, ages and abilities of the children and young people. This requires you to work out staff to children ratio’s to make sure there is legally enough staff for the number of children present and to ensure all children will have supervision. Ratio numbers will vary depending on the age of the children. You should also make sure that the environment both inside and outside caters for all different abilities, making sure there are not steps up to any entrances or doors in and around the setting, that clear walk ways can be seen through the setting to avoid any accidents and to meet the needs of any children with any disability.
