‘The Hunger Games’ is a written/extended text (novel) written by Suzanne Collins, which is a dystopian novel written in the voice of a 16 year-old, Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. The Capitol is a highly advanced metropolis, which has full authority and control of the entire nation that consists of 12 surrounding Districts. The Hunger Games itself, is an annual event where one by and one girl is selected as tributes from each of the 12 Districts to participate and compete in a televised battle till the death, where only the last one standing will be victorious. One of the key idea in the text reveals the inequalities between the rich and poor.…
Katniss shows the Habit of Mind known as Taking Responsible Risks. First, she shows this characteristic by volunteering to be a tribute in the Hunger Games instead of her sister, knowing…
“‘I volunteer!’ I gasp, ‘I volunteer as tribute!’”(00). This quote shows how much she truly cares about her sister and how much she wants to protect her. She is willing to sacrifice her own safety, and take on even more of life’s more difficult obstacles to make sure her sister is truly safe. Katniss knows that she needs to win the Hunger games for her family, and surviving the games is just an obstacle in her path to see her family again. In the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character Katniss Everdeen survives the life obstacles of providing for her family and surviving the Hunger Games with the help of Peeta Mellark in the Capitol.…
Minotaur is a half man half bull creature. “In the Egyptian religion, [Minotaur] was called Apis, a sacred bull that was regarded as the incarnation of their god Osiris or of Ptah” (Minotaur MythOrTruthCom). His parents were Queen Pasiphae and King Minos of Crete. Minos asked Poseidon, the god of the sea to send him a bull, which he promised to give up as an offering but when he saw the beautiful bull come out of the sea, he wanted it for himself. He gave up one of the best animals from his herd in order to keep the bull. This made Poseidon mad so he had Mino’s wife Pasiphae fall in love with the bull. She had an architect make a fake cow for her so she could fool the bull into making love with her.…
Did you ever realize that the Hunger Games and Julius Caesar have a lot of similarities? Not just Julius Caesar, but also the whole Ancient Roman Empire itself. The Latin word “Panem”, the country the Hunger Games is located, means bread in English. To me, the Hunger Games is more of an advanced version with all of the same concepts of the former Ancient Roman Empire. There is an old Greek myth that exists where fourteen Athenian boys and girls are sent to Crete to fight for their lives to keep their city, like Katniss does to keep district twelve.…
In the fictional novel, The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, a girl named Katniss has to fight for her life in the 74th annual Hunger Games. The book focused on Katniss volunteering to be in the Hunger Games and her journey to the arena. Also, it focused on her battling to win with her partner Peeta after a rule change allowing both to win. The three topics addressed in the exciting book are characterization, conflict, and themes.…
In Teen Dystopia: Should we be worried about what Generation Z is reading?, the author, Sophie Boyer debates whether The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is a suitable book for our generation to read. Through the discussion of both sides of the story, in the end, the author concludes that The Hunger Games is a “well-constructed allegory that reflects a more realistic portrayal of our world” and “reminds the reader to never take anything for granted.…
The Hunger Games series is the perfect example of a dystopian society. After the United States fell apart Panem was created and that is where Hunger Games was started. North America is split into 12 Districts based on wealth and each District specializes own their own area. Any type of retaliation towards the Government, or known as the Capitol in the series, is not acceptable and punishment will most likely happen. Because of the lack of freedom of speech they have I think thats why The Hunger Games is one of the best examples of a dystopian society.…
Katniss Everdeen inspires many with her powerful and strong feminine figure in the Hunger Games series. After Katniss volunteers for tribute, Prim, Katniss’ sister who was originally picked to be a tribute, starts screaming and crying. Katniss starts to become emotionally affected by Prim’s cries. Before she could shed a tear, Katniss realizes that “... everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as a easy target. A weakling. I will give no one that satisfaction” (Collins 23). Katniss shows her strength and determination to be successful in the hunger games when she notices small details that make…
For my independent novel study, I have decided to use Suzanne Collin’s Novel the Hunger Games; a story set around a teenaged girl’s firsthand account of gladiator-like sports in a post-apocalyptic era where North America once stood. The book creates a mood or sense of suspense and hope for Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist who has to fight for survival in the Hunger Games. This reminds me of and relates to the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Where in his novel, a group of boys are found stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere and must fight for their survival as well as hope to be rescued. Katniss, just like the boys, finds herself trapped in an arena with other tributes, but instead of joining up with them she must fight them to the death in order to survive. She also has hope for her family. That her mother and younger sister Prim are surviving without her being able to care for them by hunting and providing them with a proper meal.…
While the circumstances of The Hunger Games novel are viewed as extreme, many have noted that the novels are more similar to “the real world” than we would like to think. While today’s generation is not forced to fight to the death, many can relate to the theme of survival. “The hunger and starvation experienced by the districts can relate to issues in the United States by comparing the Capitol’s wastefulness to that of the U.S. population” (Simmons). Despite being a work of dystopian fiction, the issues of class inequality and the struggle to survive are extremely relevant to today’s society, and the parallels between such a harsh world of fiction and the one that we live in today has contributed to the mass popularity of the…
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has a main Capitol where everyone lives and it is very fancy. For them to live like that there are 12 Districts which are responsible for providing the Capitol with different resources, such as coal and food. The people in the districts live really horrible lives. When they try to stand up for themselves the government squashes them like a bug. They create a game for the capital’s entertainment and also to punish the people for trying to rebel. The Hunger Games is treated like a reality TV show. Everything is controlled and if you do something that the gamemakers didn’t like they would control the game to punish you. The one person who lives and survives the Hunger Games gets to live in a nice place in their district. The main character Katniss cheats the system. She and the other survivor were going to take some berries that would kill them both and so the gamemakers stopped the game and they seemingly both…
To conclude, the dystopian stories “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, both share the same theme by using characters action. The theme demonstrated in both stories is, rebelling against an oppressive government to stand up for what you believe in. Katniss’s and Harrison’s behavior and actions will leave you with the question, will you ever go against the government to stand up for what you believe…
The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) focuses on the main character Katniss and her journey to revolt against the corrupt power system of her government the capitol. The ‘Hunger Games’ is a way of controlling those in the capitols power. Comparison “All I can think is how unjust the whole thing is, the Hunger Games. Why am I hopping around like some trained dog trying to please people I hate?” communicates how Katniss feels the Capitol is corrupt and there ‘hunger games’ is a way to exert there power over those they control. Like Katnisse’s viewpoint “Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch – this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy” reveals how those oppressed by the capitols power realise that their lives are controlled by the capitol and they have no option…
Katniss and Theseus have similar stories and situations. To start off, they both lead their countries to great success through their own sacrifices. Katniss sacrificed her life and leaving home to protect the people she loved to join the Hunger Games. This action sparked the beginning of a revolution which leads to the freedom of Panem. Theseus, on the other hand, left home to go to Athens, sacrificing his safety to find the father he never knew. This event lead to Theseus…
