1. Do you agree or disagree with Friedman’s assessment that the world is flat? Be sure to justify your answer
I agree with Friedman that technology has made the world flat. But there is another point of view disagree with Friedman stating that there are still many people that do not have access to technology and for them the world is still round.
2. What are the potential impacts of a flat world for a student performing a job search?
In a flat world it is far more difficult to get a job because competition will be increasing at an incredible rate. There are currently 1 billion people online in 2006. It is anticipated that 4 billion people will be online by 2010. As the next 3 billion people come online in the next 4 years competition is going to dramatically increase.
But the truth is that Students can now perform a global job search right from their apartment. A student in Chicago can accept a job in Tokyo and never leave the apartment, even when the job starts.
3. What can students do to prepare themselves for competing in a flat world?
Businesses operate using technology and understanding how business and technology relate will help them achieve success. They can use it as advantage in their completion. And they will gain more skills and learn new ideas
4. Identify a current flattener not mentioned on Friedman’s list
Videophones and collaboration tools allowing people to meet face-to-face even when they are in different parts of the world
Technologies such as Voice-over-IP that offer a cheap alternative to traditional long-distance carrier

Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century is a bestselling book in which he examines an in depth analysis of globalization in today’s world. It is called the world if flat because it is actually a metaphor for looking at the world as a level playing field in terms of business where all of the competitors have equal opportunities. In this book, Friedman talks about ten different factors that play an important role in explaining why exactly the world is flat. The first of these “flatteners” was the collapse of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. He refers to this in the book with the statement, “When the walls came down, and the windows came up”. This event marked the end of the end of the Cold War, which in turn permitted people from the other side of the wall to join the economic mainstream. This date in time also marked the fall of communism and the ever so great impact that Windows PC has had on individuals to be innovative and creative and connect with one another. It was during this time that the standard for all computer platforms was created. The standard included the following: IBM PC, Windows Operating System, a graphical interface for word processing, dial up modems, a standardized tool for communication, and a global phone network. The second “flattener” as stated in the book was “Netscape”. Netscape went public at a price of $28 dollars on August 9, 1995. Netscape and the World Wide Web made it possible for everyone to enjoy the Internet from kids to elderly people and not just computer geeks. Answer: In my opinion, Friedman does an outstanding job of convincing me and the reader that the world is flat because of technology. Also, he is a fantastic public speaker and I was very intrigued by his theories on globalization. However, in his speech at MIT I did notice him say the words “plug and play” a lot as he was speaking to the audience. Therefore, my first thought was how are the people around the world being able to afford computers and the internet.
