1. Do you agree or disagree with Friedman’s assessment that the world is flat? Be sure to justify your answer.
I don’t fully agree with Friedman’s vision of the “flat World”. Though I think we are more connected and informed than ever. According to me I feel Friedman’s views and research is mostly concerning the developed countries focusing on business and targeting the cooperate world. Today technology, telecommunications has definitely helped people around the world to be closer. But Friedman’s does not mention the less fortunate countries where the globalization is still a far dream. I feel Friedman’s analysis is a good fit for the rich and developed countries, where World has changed to a “global village”.
2. What are the potential impacts of a flat world for a student performing a job search?
Today’s educated youth has all the potential and access to the world of technology at their fingertips. They can easily change to the growing job demands and are ready for job changes as needed. They sure got to have good education as the competition is high in today’s economy. I don’t think it’s difficult to find a job; it depends on how open you are to change in the new world of job opportunities and choose the best option.
3. What can students do to prepare themselves for competing in a flat world?
Students can equip themselves for this competitive World by acquiring good education. Be updated in the field of your study and keep yourself open to news and updates.
The coffee shop business is mainly framed in 2 mainstreams. First group is the major players like Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, Dietrich, Brewsters, New World, Gloria Gears, which can be denoted as Specialty Brands. Second group contains One-Store coffee shops like The Broadway Café. These are generally local, small businesses.

    In view of Thomas Friedman’s work “It’s a flat world, after all”, the entire planet is turning into a global village due to a rapid growth of information technology. There are 10 major contributors, which were also named “flateners” by Friedman, that made the playing field level.     In the current economic situation in the U.S, graduating high school and going off to college for a degree has pretty much become the goal for most of the students here in the United States. According to the Institute of Education Sciences, studies have shown that between 1999 and 2009, the number of students in the United States perusing a degree in college full time has risen by almost 45% while part time students increased by 28%. With the vast expanding number of students, the number of job openings for these certain fields are simply not enough to provide every graduate with a job. Because of this problem the unemployment rates are staggeringly high here in the United States which includes the 44% those coming out of college. (Rampell) Take Kyle Bishop for example. Currently 24, he has been waiting tables, delivering beer, and working at a bookstore since 2009 when he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. (Rampell) Stories like this arise every day and only more appear. It will eventually affect future college students pursuing a degree and those who return to study to obtain a degree. Despite these stories however, many companies have been seeking employees to fill up positions for months to years. Many of these jobs have included machinist, welder, and many more in manufacturing, hence blue collar jobs. Now you may be thinking, how can companies not fill up position for manual labor? But with the pace of the advancement of technology in modern society, machinery has become more complicated and requires a higher skill cap to use compared to before while the number of workers with the skill to operate them has been dwindling. In the North Dakota oil fields, there is a 30% shortage of petroleum engineers and a 10% shortage of machinists that the companies simply cannot find enough workers with the skillsets to fill up these positions.     Thomas Friedman's lecture on his book "The World is Flat", is not only humorous but insightfully clever. Friedman's lecture breaks down the first three chapters of his book. I found this lecture interesting because studying the field of business you're instantly introduced to what globalization is but never where it actually began and the advancements it has made over time. Robert Florida's article "The World is Spiky" expanded and contrasted Friedman's theory. Robert Florida's "The World is Spiky" article was written to refute Friedman's claim that the world is flat and to insight his argument that the world is indeed spiky. Friedman argues that the global economic playing field has been leveled because people no longer have to emigrate in order to innovate. Florida argues that the global economic playing field is anything but leveled and that few regions truly matter in today's global economy. Since I tend to agree that both men have valid points, it's hard to say that I disagree with either theory. I understand Florida's argument that many places have become irrelevant in today's economy because of the lack of technological advancements, population, and resources; yet the article to me didn't really do a good job at contrasting Friedman's point of view. I felt Friedman was looking at the world in the perspective of people being able to compete in a global economy due to a broader spectrum of connectivity, such as the internet, cell phones, and express services (FedEx); while Florida was looking at the world totally in a demographic perspective and only concentrated on one aspect of Friedman's argument. Florida felt that rural and underdeveloped areas would no longer be a factor in the growing global economy because the cities and regions that drive the world economy, are growing ever higher while the valleys, with little economic activity, recede still further.
