Flat Earth Society
What you may or may not have known is that the Earth is actually flat. In this paper I will insert testimonies from several celebrities and scientists while giving reasoning behind this claim. Flat Earth Society has several facts behind this. One is the Bedford Level experiment shown here. The first investigation was carried out by Samuel Birley Rowbotham (1816-1884), the president of the Flat Earth Society, in the summer of 1838. He waded into the river and used a telescope held eight inches above the water to watch a boat with a five-foot mast row slowly away from him. He reported that the vessel remained constantly in his view for the full six miles to Welney bridge, whereas, had the water surface been curved with the accepted circumference …show more content…
The photographer, Edgar Clifton from Dallmeyer's studio, mounted his camera two feet above the water at Welney and was surprised to be able to obtain a picture of the target, which should have been invisible to him given the low mounting point of the camera. Lady Blount published the pictures far and wide and, apart from some hypothesising concerning refraction, and dark hints of collusion between Blount and Clifton, these have not been explained. Some believe that photos can disprove the flat earth theory, Flat Earth Society says: “In general, we at the Flat Earth Society do not lend much credibility to photographic evidence. It is too easily manipulated and altered. Many of the videos posted here to "prove a round earth" by showing curvature will show no curvature or even concave curvature at parts. The sources are so inaccurate it's difficult to build an argument on them in either case. Furthermore, barrel distortion and other quirks of modern cameras will cause a picture to distort with little or no apparent altercation; especially without references within the picture. Photographs are also prone to distortion when taken through the bent glass of a pressurized cabin as well as atmospheric conditions on the outside. With this …show more content…
This explains why high altitude photographs are generally curved to produce the illusion of a round horizon.” All of this is compelling evidence. But you may not believe just any person, so I may be able to sway your decision with a quote from Kyrie Irving: “For what I’ve known for as many years and what I’ve been taught is that the Earth is round, but I mean, if you really think about it from a landscape of the way we travel, the way we move and the fact that can you really think of us rotating around the sun and all planets aligned, rotating in specific dates being perpendicular with what’s going on with these planets and stuff like this … It doesn’t come back. There is no concrete information except for the information that they’re giving us.” A very solid point Mr. Irving here’s another quote from Shaquille O’Neal: “It’s true. The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat. Yeah, it is. Yes, it is. Listen, there are three ways to manipulate the mind — what you read, what you see and what you hear. In school, first thing they teach us is, ‘Oh, Columbus discovered America,’ but when he got there, there were some fair-skinned people with the long hair smoking on the peace pipes. So, what does that tell you? Columbus didn’t discover America. So, listen, I drive from coast to coast, and this (expletive) is flat to me.

In his essay “The World is Flat”, Thomas L. Friedman reckons with the belief of flattening world he realizes in the journey to India. Friedman notes that Columbus's sea exploration shortened the distance for Spanish monarchy to grow its wealth and power out of the "source of [India's] untold riches" (633), and discovered "the world was indeed round" (664). Columbus found the hardware source of India's riches which is the free slavery labor and natural resources, and yet Friedman found the software source of India's riches when he "encountered in the real India [which] profoundly shook my faith in [the world is round]" (664). After meeting the Indians who "taken American names" with "great imitations of American accents", "are writing specific…

In Friedman's book, "The World Is Flat" he explains many reasons as to why he believes the world is "flat". Flat meaning connected, no boundaries,or no blockages. He believes the world has slowly been flattening due to certain events/actions which he calls "flatteners." I believe some flatteners had a greater impact on globalization in the world than others. An example of one would be flattener #1. Friedman named the first flattener, " 11/9/89 When the Walls Came Down and the Windows Went Up". On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall…

Christopher Columbus didn’t actually prove that the Earth itself was round. The reason is that because, the time when he traveled across the Atlantic ocean, or sailed to the ocean, there were quite few people who actually thought that it is actually possible to fall thought the edge of the Earth. The myths itself mentioned that the people said there were monsters and boiling water and it is impossible to cross over it, and yet no one did it except for Christopher Columbus. Offensive: Christopher Columbus and the rest of his crew were the reasons of the spreading of diseases, and were introduced syphilis and smallpox to most of the population that were completely devastated by them. Yet, I still thought that this day should turn into Native…

Are they real? Could the possibility exist of faked space exploration photos? This example, seems to be a solid point. With the existence of thousands of photos having been taken from space, of the Earth, one might think it would be next to impossible to have made sure that those all look similar in shape and detail. The flat Earthers however, believe since all photos taken by satellite have been digitally edited to make details more vivid and other undisclosed reasons, they are…

The final section of Brave New World achieves the ultimate impact that people see the world differently. At the end, while Mustapha Mond and John are having a conversation, the reader can see that not everyone can handle one man’s opinion of a perfect society. In Ford’s society people have different classes, any night time partner they wish to have, a set job, all the leisure they want, no worries, no parents, no kids, and soma. What they don’t have is attraction, old things, religion, poetry, a fear of death, wonder, choices, and even science. To this John says, “‘No I don’t like civilization… It all seems to me quite horrible’” (Huxley, p. 218) and he even yelled, “‘But do you like being slaves?’” (Huxley, p. 212) to a crowd of citizens who…

Harrison offers two substantial objections to Putnam’s position that I find to be plausible. First, he suggests that the argument is a fallacy. For example, in a world which by the term “round” everyone really meant “flat,” it would technically be false that the world is round. However, the world would remain round regardless of whatever people meant by the word “round;” Therefore, he thinks, the use of words should not have “effects of such cosmic proportions.” If, for instance, people considered the word “round” to mean what we consider the definition of “flat,” the claim that “the earth is round” would be false.…

As technology and social networking become increasingly dominant in our society, our lives grow less and less personal at an alarming rate. If such a transformation continues to occur, we could find our world completely dysfunctional and without necessary social skills, within a matter of years. This technology-based, socially flawed community would not be unlike that of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, where individuals are unable to obtain true happiness due to the deficiency in their quality of life. Although some might say that the society in Fahrenheit 451 is filled with and based upon constant happiness, it is truly a place that is plagued with numerous defects, and void of certain proper characteristics. A few of these unfulfilled characteristics include relationships, emotions, and curiosity.…

    1. “But Friedman’s image of a flat earth is profoundly misleading – a view of the world from a seat in business class. Flatness is another way of describing the transnational search by companies for cheap labor, an image that misses the pervasiveness of global inequality and the fact that much of the developing world remains mired in poverty and misery. It also misses the importance of the global geopolitical hierarchy, which guarantees the provision of stability, property rights, and other international public goods. The rise of China and India is less about flatness than it is about dramatic upheavals in the mountains and valleys of the global geopolitical map”…
