1. Which poems in this unit focus on the beauty of the natural world? How are these poems similar? How are they different?

2. Answer:

“Beauty” and “Barter” address the importance of the beauty of the natural world. Both poems suggest that natural beauty is important. However, they say it in different ways. E-yeh-shure’ poem (beauty) shows how important beauty is by exploring the positive things of the natural beauty of humans, But focuses on human beauty along with nature. Sara Teasdale’s poem (barter) also focuses on the fact that nature brings beauty to our lives, but in the way we watch nature’s beauty.

3. “A Poison Tree” and “All the World’s a Stage” both employ extended metaphors. Explain each poem’s metaphor and the ways in which William Blake and William Shakespeare use the metaphors to convey their messages to readers.

4. Answer:

In “A Poison Tree” William Blake shows his wrath as a tree. That instead of acting upon he fed and nourished until it grew a beautiful apple that made his foe jealous. Then one night his foe stole the apple to eat and in the morning was found dead beneath the tree. The story is not plausible to grow a poison tree and kill your foe. But if applied to life this poem makes since. We all have wrath and if we keep this and use it for motivation we cangrow and flourish something that our foes will never account to. In William Shakespeare’s “All the World’s a Stage” he uses a metaphor. He says the world is a stage and we are the

After reading all of the poems I sense a common theme. Of trying to understand the world and the restrictions it has on us. Even in things or events that we have no control over. Also our reactions to the change of weather for better. Or the things not known by others in certain exceptions of life.…

One scene in The Known World depicts an odd event. While many scenes show brutality, injustice, humility, and love, a small scene where one slave is good to his master carries a different message. This section of the novel explores a relationship of two characters that are arguably unimportant. I would not say that the novel needs these two characters to be a success. The slave or master alone does not play a major role in the plot, but together they display a profound message. It is for this reason that makes this short sub chapter intriguing. If these two characters have such a little impact on creating this story and an impact on others, than why are these particular persons here? Edward P. Jones writes about a relationship of a master and a slave that has grown strong, and though the relationship is bound with nothing but obedience and gratitude, the security of the relationship has made the master weary. Here Jones illustrates how the master, Clara, and the slave, Ralph, have created their own world blurring the line of separation between master and slave.…

To express a love and the physical connection associated with it, oftentimes adjectives can depict and describe relationships, or even people. Different aspects of nature can be substituted in place of the adjectives to help covey the same imagery, but often times in a more powerful manner. The use of nature in poems can be very effective when expressing emotions and actions associated with love. Using notions such as barking dogs to convey heartbreak and anger, to hills being a safe haven for goats such as a gods love is to their followers, the use of nature can have a very drastic impact in writing (XXIII. 7-10) (119).…

John Smiths writings are not credible. There are too many parts in his recordings that do not make sense that lead me to my decision. The accounts of Pocahontas are a major factor that many say make Smiths works not credible. When John Smith was kidnapped by the King of the Powohatan Tribe, Pocahontas’ dad, they were about to kill him then and there. Side note: they kidnapped Smith just to kill him instead of killing him during the battle between Smiths men and the Native Americans. Why would they spear Smith’s life after they killed all his men? Anyways, right before the King & his men were about to kill him, weapons drawn, this young girl jumps in and shields Smith from the men. “Pocahontas with no appeal or petition got his head in her arms and laid her own upon his o save him from death.” She happened to be the king’s daughter. She was so brave that she risked her own life just to save a stranger that was an enemy in her father’s eyes. But John Smith does not give us any time of reason why Pocahontas did this for him because when Pocahontas covered him they didn’t kill him. Later in the story he records how after he was released, Pocahontas was providing him with food and other things so he wouldn’t starve to death. But yet again Smith doesn’t record why she is doing this for him, making a reader like me suspicious about his credibility. Maybe she had a crush on him but I don’t think they were secretly in love because she was probably too young for him.…

An extended metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two essentially unlike things at some length and in several ways. In “Poison Tree”, the poet compares a tree to the speaker’s anger. Throughout the poem, the tree grows which resembles the speaker’s anger growing. In lines 3-4, his anger just begins to grow, “I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow.” Then in lines 5-6, the speaker waters the tree which helps its growing, the speaker’s anger also grows because he hides it with smiles, “And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.” As the speaker’s anger grows to a maximum point, the tree bears an apple, “And it grew both day and night Till it bore an apple bright,” in lines 9-10. By the last stanza, the speaker tricks the foe and kills him due to his anger, which has now fully grown into a tree with a “poisonous” apple, “And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole: In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree.”…

Beauty is something everyone desires, something everyone feels as a need in their life. Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. In the poems, "Identity" by Julio Noboa and "the lesson of the moth" by Don Marquis, the authors have different and similar approaches to the development of the universal theme, beauty.…

A hero is a person who’s responsible and a good role model. A hero is also someone who has done something meaningful in his/her life. It is universally accepted that both Paul Rusesabagina and Oskar Schindler are examples of extraordinary people who accomplished incredible feats by standing up for good in the face of evil, such as crimes against humanity and genocide. They were men that helped people other than their selves and actually cared what happens to those other people. They were not selfish and what they did saved and changed many lives during the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust. Both actions were intelligent and very brave. They could have, at any moment, been killed but were determined to help others.…

The poem is structurally similar to a sonnet because it has 14 lines, it can be divided into an octet and sestet and it is written in iambic pentameter. The poem has a definite rhyme scheme of abbabba cdecde. This use of form brings out the cyclic, eternal and perpetual life of nature. The use of imagery is unmistakably showing us the reverence for the natural world. Imagery is shown in the Octet summer afternoon as the hot sun, cooling trees, hedge and New-mown mead meaning meadow. In the Sestet winter evening its shown as lone winter evening, frost, stove and silence. This creates contrast from the pleasant and active mood, and lively environment created by the words ‘delights’ and ‘fun’ to the dismal and melancholy mood, and slow and peaceful environment created by ‘silence’ and ‘drowsiness’.…

Washington's ultimate prize of changing the leadership of Iraq may be tantalisingly close. But the only policies which are coordinated and focused are those of its present President Saddam Hussein. The international community is fragmented and the Iraqi opposition in disarray. Indeed, the tensions between those ranged against Saddam are mounting in a manner perhaps more appropriate to a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta than a conflict which will arguably influence the political future of the Middle East. So what forces will be unleashed on the 'day after'?…
