Part I: Character Identification in "A Rose for Emily" In complete sentence format, identify each of the following characters. Remember reporters, be sure to include as much information as possible to give your readers a vivid picture of each of the following characters: 1. Emily Grierson – When she died, the entire town went to her funeral for two reasons. 1: The men went through a short of respectful affection for the fallen monument and 2: the women out of curiosity to see the inside part of Emily’s house. Emily’s boyfriend that soon to be husband left her and she became depressed and stopped taking care of herself and her home. She also stopped paying taxes because she didn’t go out much but stayed mostly inside her house. Her father mostly ran her life and he never approved any guy to be worthy to marry his daughter so Emily didn’t get married. 2. Colonel Sartoris- Colonel Sartoris is the Mayor of the former town. When he was alive, he established the myth that the town had to take care of Emily so she didn’t have to pay taxes like everyone else had to. 3. Tobe-I think he is a caretaker. He does everything Emily tells him to do. I think that Tobe is an African American just like Emily. 4. Judge Stevens- He is an 80 year old man. He was the mayor of the town when Emily was alive, when a woman complained to him about the smell that was coming from Emily’s house he didn't know how to tell Emily, so he suggested that the men pour lime around the premises to get rid of the smell. 5. Homer Barron- He is described as a Yankee. Homer is described as a big dark man and his eyes are lighter than his face. His voice is big. He also makes people laugh and it said that Homer likes other men so I think he might be gay. Everyone thought he was married to Emily but he wasn’t he didn’t want to get married.…

Both of the novellas mentioned are set in 1920-1930 which was a time when women were seen as a lower class than men due to that fact that they are a different sexuality, meaning they were not treated fairly and both books show this sexism with lines like “George sighed. "You give me a good whore house every time," he said. "A guy can go in an' get drunk and get ever'thing outa his system all at once, an' no messes. And he knows how much it's gonna set him back. These here jail baits is just set on the trigger of the hoosegow." this quote just shows that George, but not just George because he would represent most men at that time period, who will see the women as exchangeable objects that are only used to satisfy certain needs in exchange for money which could be the main reason why Curley's wife is not talked kindly about in the novel, as she is married therefore not allowed to satisfy their needs as in their minds she would be “defunct”. Steinbeck and Priestly show this sexism at many points in their texts even though in the novellas it is never said directly that women are inferior to men it is indirectly implied. Both Eva Smith and Curley's wife are victims of class as Eva smith is victimised by each member of the Birling family, who, because of their “bullying”, are ultimately, partly responsible for Eva's death.…

    1. My last English class was very challenging. We worked mostly on analyzing and evaluating arguments. This included working with multiple articles and really understanding what the author was trying to argue. As a class, we really worked a lot with mapping and charting the texts. These seemed to take the longest to do because you are really digging deep into the text and trying to understand exactly what the author is trying to say. The most important thing that I learned is that “good writing is rewriting”. That was one of Micah’s quotes that he would say to us the entire semester, but it is true. You cannot expect to slide by with just one draft of your writing. We would spend weeks on just one assignment, making lots of revisions and constantly fixing things. This really helped me as the semester progressed.…

He wrote the poem after the battle of Blenheim because he wanted to express him opinion through poetry. The poem is anti-war. It shows the futility of it, because all that came of it was "many thousand bodies here lay rotting in the sun" and "land was wasted far and wide",nothing good actually came of it, as Kaspar and his family are still living just as happily as they were before the war, indicating the war brought nothing good to the ordinary man. Southey shows this by setting the start of the poem in an idyllic atmosphere. When the children ask Kaspar "what good came of it at last",Kaspar is left stumbling for words, because he knows that no good came of it really, and Southey wants the reader to realize this. Southey is a Romantic poet he went away from the established truth, and he portrayed the younger generation challenging the older one, with something which is actually a very good point, and is representing the thoughts of the public. Perhaps, the poem is written in ballad form to link the simple poetic form to the simple ideas that the children represent, which ultimately shows that old Kaspar is not wise whereas in most literature he would be. Therefore, Southey wrote this poem to make the reader understand that war is nothing heroic, it is unexplained killing, and should not happen.…
