“The Work of Leadership” by Ronald A. Heifetz and Donald L. Laurie
Introduction
Leaders are like shepherds who guide their flocks (the employees) on the right track keep them away from any harm or treat. Leaders who truly care for their followers expose them to the painful reality of their condition and demand that they fashion a response. Instead of giving people false assurance that their best is good enough, leaders insists that people surpass themselves. Adaptive work is required when our deeply held beliefs are challenged, when the values that made us successful become less relevant, and when legitimate yet competing perspectives emerge.Getting people to do adaptive work is the mark of leadership in a competitive world. There are six principles for leading adaptive work: “getting on the balcony,” identifying the adaptive challenge, regulating distress, maintaining disciplined attention, giving the work back to people, and protecting voices of leadership from below.

Get on the balcony
Leaders must let his people know the history of the enterprise so that they will be aware of what are the past issues, good things that happened. From that there would be a comparison from the past and the present so that you’ll be able to identify the areas of improvement. A leader must see the need for change and if there is none he must create one. If the leader would just stay on the balcony and just watch over nothing will happen but they will just become prisoner of the old system.
Identify your adaptive challenge Threat is everywhere. As leader you must be sensitive and aware on what is happening within your environment. You should make sure that you are ready so that when an enemy attacks, you’re prepared. Whenever challenges occur, before you act you must identify first where the problem is coming from then after communicate it to your people and then together you plan strategies.     The first being strong leadership must be clear and present all levels of the organization. The middle level leader manners just as much top the organization’s success just as much as the top. Collins states “great leadership at the top doesn’t amount to much if you don’t have exceptional leadership at the unit level. That’s where great things happen” (2013).
