The Ulster Project Analysis
This summer I participated in the Ulster Project of Greater Hutchinson. I had the opportunity, along with fourteen other teenagers in Hutchinson, of hosting a teen from Northern Ireland. The idea behind The Ulster Project is to form young Christian leaders as well as peacemakers here, in America, and in Northern Ireland.
During the month of July we had many different chances to help in our community. Once July was over and I looked back on the month I realized how much Hutchinson has going on. There are a number of organizations that will always take extra help. We got to spend a day with the clients at TECH followed by a dance later that evening with them at Anchor Inn. During that day we got to see everything that happened at the different TECH places in Hutchinson. We got to help some clients dye scarves and neckties. The group I was in had to move big branches out of an area and into a truck so they could get rid of the bugs in the branches. It was going really well until one of the Irish kids saw a huge spider. After the spider was spotted the amount of focus from the group drastically went down. Everyone was worried about avoiding the spider. We eventually got the work done with it taking way longer than it should have.
The next night we had the Blarney Sampler. With the help of our Irish teen, we put together two or three Irish dishes for people to come try. As we were planning for it the girl who was staying with me, Jane, noted that there wasn’t a whole lot of strictly Irish food other than spuds. So after finding a recipe that got her okay, we were away mashing potatoes, making pie, and mixing together Irish Soda Bread. That night as all of us proudly stood behind the dishes we made, people came and got a taste of Ireland. July was a once in a lifetime chance and I got to help people while having fun with my new best
