The Sophomores-Serve Program
The opportunity to be a part of the Sophomores-Serve program is one of the most exciting that I have encountered. As someone anticipating a career in medicine I am very interested in integrating science and community service. My academic experience thus far has centered on lectures where it can be hard to take what is being taught and apply it to the outside world. With this program, I believe I will be able to not only learn about something I am interested in, the food environment, but also improve my ability to practically use my knowledge to improve the surrounding world. Besides providing an amazing opportunity to engage with the community, the Sophomores-Serve program is exciting to me it combines two topics that I am genuinely interested

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

It provides me with a great school, and a beneficial work experience. I have learned the ups and downs of working part time, and attending school full time. My dream to become a doctor is not my dream, but the dream of my entire community. The necessity of me giving back to my community is utmost important, which is why I am a strong advocate for community service. Having done over 350 hours of service, I have learned from professional doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital events, and passed on my knowledge as a mentor and tutor to the struggling students at my school. I also take charge in school events, because being a leader is what allows a person to adapt and help others more efficiently. Growing up in an Iranian household and living in a highly diverse area, I am driven to continue to learn and experience different people, cultures, communities and areas of study. Also, I played sports throughout my life and played football until my sophomore year of college. Being diverse, living in a diverse area and developing qualities of discipline, hard work and determination from football, I am fearless to go beyond my comfort zone to learn and work with groups to positively impact individuals and communities around me. In the summer of 2014, I volunteered at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At first, I was practicing pipetting, learning about microscopes, recording data and helping scientists and doctors retrieve tools and materials.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

Do you think it is an good idea to make incoming freshmen commit to a career at a young age? Incoming freshmen are required to know what career they want to do. This is a good idea because when they come out of high school they won’t be confused on what career they want to pursue. Another way it is a good idea is they will be more focused in school because they are focused on trying to get to their career in order. I believe that committing to a career is a good idea because it could help young adults prepare for the work field. This is why I think incoming freshmen should commit to a career.…

The Freshman Service Project is the first service that I have ever done in my life. Although I have volunteered to help in local events and charity organization occasionally throughout high school, those can’t be classified as a service. Unlike volunteering, which only benefits the recipients, a service benefits both parties, the helpers and the people that we are helping. The Freshman Service Project in my opinion is a brilliant way for us college students to give back to our society.…

Altogether, being in the Youth Volunteer Corps group has allowed me to mature by seeing how much poverty is around and making me realize how grateful I should be. I have met new people and have become friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It has showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind. The experiences I have gained will help me in the future as I move away from home and deal with diverse personalities and people from all walks of life. I…

I learned very soon after starting my freshmen year at Hixson High School that this was a school that wants to see achievers and believers walk across the stage at graduation and enter into the world around. Through the teachers encouraging me to push myself to do the very best I could possibly due, the multiple organizations and clubs available, and this inner spark that drives me to achieve greatness, I quickly became involved around the school. I am currently the National Honor Society Secretary, Senior Council Representative, Nation Beta Club Member, Hixson Mat Cat Treasurer, and one of the founding members of Hixson Girl Talk. Without these opportunities offered, I would not have built relationships with fellow classmen, teachers, faculty and staff, and most importantly, members of the Hixson community through volunteer work, team bonding, and a shared desire to continue to improve the area.…

Southern Utah University’s EDGE Program is a major contributor in my service project. The EDGE Program stands for Education Designed to Give Experience. My service trip to the Dominican Republic helped me gain firsthand experience in the medical field and with patients. This helped me solidify my dream of becoming a doctor and to develop interpersonal skills that will assist me in my career endeavors. I believe that Southern Utah University developed the EDGE Program to encourage students to learn independently outside of a classroom setting. By exploring outside of our normal boundaries, we are able to learn more about the field we are studying through experience. Furthermore, it allows us to refine our skills we developed in classrooms and apply them to the outside…

It is difficult to respond to this prompt, as the hardest challenge I have faced is a topic I do not discuss lightly. Although, it is an occurrence that I would rather forget, it has severely impacted my life. During my Sophomore year, my family was at its worst point. My parents marriage had become abusive both mentally and physically. Their arguing was constant through months on by and my terrible environment at home began to reflect in my grades. I have always been a problem solver, so I felt useless when I could not fix this difficult situation. I found it very hard to focus on schoolwork, and I struggled to follow my educational plans for the future. Although, this situation overall was very traumatic I knew I had to be diligent and most…

During my Sophomore and Junior years in M.E.S.A. I participated in competitions and assisted other group members with thief projects. One competition was a hydropower wheel which my team and I constructed. We won 5th with the wheel despite the fact that during the competition it broke and was repaired only with a generous amount of duct tape. My Senior of M.E.S.A. as Vice President I helped to run and plan meetings as well as providing supervision to the underclass men groups. Mrs.Riso also had M.E.S.A. club this year go to a Walter Douglas assembly in which they were celebrating math achievements. “If you ask for my hustle, I will give you my heart”- Chef William Ramirez. These words were told to me by my brother, who has a reinforced passion for the rigorous and creative profession that is known as the culinary arts. My passion is reinforced as well, through the “hustle” that was asked for in my academic and career experiences, where I gave my passion and dedication to achieve a new level of expertise. With this quote in mind, my academic perseverance and a determination to reach higher grounds, one will see that I am an ideal candidate for the Masters of Science(M.S.) in Nutrition, Health span and Longevity at University of Southern California(USC).…
