The Pedestrian, By Ray Bradbury Analysis
Technology has Taken over our Minds and Actions For many years technology has been consuming our daily lives, to the point where it has taken over our minds and actions. Nowadays people pay more attention to their phones, computers, etc., rather than everything else around them, therefore becoming less alert and more prone to engaging in activities without thinking of the consequences. However, if used right, technology can be a great tool in solving everyday questions, but for the most part technology has a negative impact on society. Technology has a negative impact on society because it has distracted people from basic everyday tasks and led them to danger, it has influenced people to become isolated from the rest of society, and it has driven people to enroll in …show more content…
Ray Bradbury is the author of a short story, in which the main character, Mr. Meed, is the only person that goes out to walk, rather than staying inside isolated from society to watch television. Mr. Meed encounters a variety of problems with technology, like an automated empty police car. In the end Mr. Meed get taken to a mental facility for wanting to interact with nature, instead of staying in with technology. Bradbury's short story takes place in the future, but we can evidently start seeing situations like those in the story now in our everyday lives. Bradbury states in The Pedestrian, “The street was silent and long and empty with only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk in mild country.” (Bradbury 98) By looking out our window, and then reflecting back to the story we can connect the two, and create an image of the level of isolation our society is bound to reach. We look outside, and each day we see less and less people walking out. And sometimes the only people we see out are the elderly, what will happen when they stop? Technology has started taken over us, and we're not doing anything to avoid it.

Samuel G. Freedman and Maggie Jackson both write magnificent essays about technology and how it has negatively affected society. Although, they both fail to mention that technology is not the reason for lack of education, communication, and expression of our own ideas but that it is the user who abuses the amount of technology used. Technology has been useful in many ways and has only improved society through resources of communication and information regardless of those who use technology in negative ways.…

Technology has shaped and defined human activity and it has made life easier but more dangerous. As Langdon Winner explains in his piece, Technological Somnambulism, technology is a neutral tool. It can be used in a positive or a negative way. As well, Modern technology can be dangerous in many different ways. As more technology becomes available to the public, more people rely on it. This could be a problem; for example when many people want to figure something out, they will probably just type the question into Google. Technology allows us to think less about certain things, which may be easier but it “dumbs us down”. This could be considered dangerous because we may rely on technology too much and we could become lazy with our everyday rituals. With that said, technology has also helped us improve medicine and science to help cure certain diseases. Without these improvements we wouldn’t be as strong as a community. There seems to always be positive and negative things that come with technology.…

For instance, having access technology almost 24/7 allows us to learn a lot more electronic and digital skills such as programing and virtual design. As well, it has enabled us to find ways to greatly benefit peoples lives through medical means, such as medicine research, cancer treatment, and robotic limbs. It also has become a source of connection for people living in different countries. Many peoples lives have changed by meeting unknown relatives, life long friends, and significant others through technology. However, having so much technology making our lives easier causes us to become increasingly dependent on it. People are so used to having common tasks done with a click of a button, that we forget how to live normally, performing our own actions by ourselves. A major example of this is communication; with apps like Facebook, Instagram, and twitter, we are able to connect and talk to hundreds of people without even saying one word out loud. We have become so addicted to online presence that we forget how to talk to friends in real life. Another negative effect of technology in our society is that we have become more prone to online hackers and predators. These hackers are able to take our personal information and steal identities, corrupt businesses, and invade…

The inception of technology has largely impacted the lives of many people in society by developing their everyday activities and experiences. According to Oxford’s English Dictionary, technology is defined as, “the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.” From the same source, society is defined as, “the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community.” Technology has become faster, more affordable and more accessible over time. Some of the greatest aspects of society that have been affected are schools, households, businesses, and service industries. Change is inevitable and because more young minds are being skillfully developed every day, technology is also growing. The evolution of technology and the internet in society has stimulated growth and development in a human’s life by using preexisting solutions to enhance different communication systems. The person of the 21st century has the luxury of being dependent on technology, allowing for certain weaknesses to sprout out of individuals due to their lack of natural abilities. Technology is the making, modification, use, and knowledge of tools, machines, or techniques, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, or perform a specific function. It’s true; technology has made life more efficient and reliable. Many great inventions have been possible through technology. Technology is also one of the causes of people becoming lazier, uninspired, and less creative. Technology is not bad in and of itself, but people are misusing it. Planes, trains, and automobiles carry people from place to place at high speeds. Telephones, television and computer networks help people communicate with others across the world. Medical technologies from vaccines to Stem Cell therapy, allow people to live longer, healthier lives. Although most people think technology made life easier, it’s actually making them overly dependent on those technologies.…

However some other people see this as a negative. They believe that technology is taking over our lives and preventing us from being independent. Instead of making us look for that lost TV remote, we can merely replace it. In fact, technology can have many negative impacts. It can lead people to be less social as they are always using a device even when around other people. Studies have shown that people, who are socially isolated, lead shorter lives. Using technology constantly can lead people to have poor social skills and they struggle to read body language in other people. Also excessive use of technology can lead to obesity. The more time people spend playing grand theft auto online or watching funny cat videos the less time they are spending being active or exercising. But most importantly technology is…

Technology is at the center of our universe. Technology has changed so much since the beginning of time and continues to advance even further. Technology can be both a blessing and a curse. Technology has made many of our lives better, but it has also hindered us as well. Technological advances in medicine are a great example of how technology is necessary. However technology often used in social media encourages less face-to-face interaction. I feel that as a whole we have become too reliant on technology. We need to be able to rely on ourselves sometimes rather than just a device all the time. The main disadvantages that technology brings about are it promotes isolationism, laziness, and lack of privacy.…

The question of whether modern technological development has been beneficial or detrimental to human beings is perhaps the most asked question that faces our society. If technology is harmful, then we need to minimize or eliminate the danger. If technology is not the source of the problems and concerns that are frequently attributed to it, then we need to find another cause for the social and psychological pressures faced by our society, so we can fix these problems. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, people have made complaints about the harmful effects of technology. (Heidegger, Martin) These factors indicate…

Technology is the present world. It affects people’s daily lives. Whether it inspires somebody to be the master at videogames or makes somebody a computer hacker. It has changed the generation of teenagers/young adults rapidly. It has made the generation more greedy, ignorant, and lazy. For instance, my parents did not have fancy cell phones or high-tech computers back then because it was never created. They only had a bike and ball until it was worn out. They never thru a fit for not getting what they wanted or sat at home, playing videogames for numerous hours. They would ALWAYS be outside, whether the weather was hot or cold, playing soccer or having a snowball fight with their friends. And when they didn’t want to go outside, they sat down, read a book, played cards, or even drank hot cocoa. Now a day, it’s all about getting an ipod touch or a phone with a touch screen. Soon, people will have chairs that will fly around to get a soda from the fridge so they don’t have to get their butt up and walk. Though there seems to be more negative influence of technology, there may still be some silver lining.…
