Are We Digital Dummies Essay
After watching the documentary “Are We Digital Dummies”, it has made me think about my use of technology and how much of an impact it has on my life. I use some form of technology pretty much all day, whether it’s my phone, laptop, or household items. Even at school, more technology, such as iPads, projectors, and computers, is being introduced into the curriculum to enhance our learning experience. All these devices allow me to be more connected to others, provides more options for research, and makes completing daily tasks a lot easier. My life revolves around using technology; I am constantly using social media apps like Facebook and Instagram to connect with friends and I do most of my homework on my laptop (for example, I am typing this …show more content…
For instance, having access technology almost 24/7 allows us to learn a lot more electronic and digital skills such as programing and virtual design. As well, it has enabled us to find ways to greatly benefit peoples lives through medical means, such as medicine research, cancer treatment, and robotic limbs. It also has become a source of connection for people living in different countries. Many peoples lives have changed by meeting unknown relatives, life long friends, and significant others through technology. However, having so much technology making our lives easier causes us to become increasingly dependent on it. People are so used to having common tasks done with a click of a button, that we forget how to live normally, performing our own actions by ourselves. A major example of this is communication; with apps like Facebook, Instagram, and twitter, we are able to connect and talk to hundreds of people without even saying one word out loud. We have become so addicted to online presence that we forget how to talk to friends in real life. Another negative effect of technology in our society is that we have become more prone to online hackers and predators. These hackers are able to take our personal information and steal identities, corrupt businesses, and invade

Our planet is ruled by technology. For many people texting is as natural as breathing and children know how to use a computer properly by the age of ten. We can communicate with friends that are miles away, without having to wait months for a letter to arrive. We can…

Technology has shaped and defined human activity and it has made life easier but more dangerous. As Langdon Winner explains in his piece, Technological Somnambulism, technology is a neutral tool. It can be used in a positive or a negative way. As well, Modern technology can be dangerous in many different ways. As more technology becomes available to the public, more people rely on it. This could be a problem; for example when many people want to figure something out, they will probably just type the question into Google. Technology allows us to think less about certain things, which may be easier but it “dumbs us down”. This could be considered dangerous because we may rely on technology too much and we could become lazy with our everyday rituals. With that said, technology has also helped us improve medicine and science to help cure certain diseases. Without these improvements we wouldn’t be as strong as a community. There seems to always be positive and negative things that come with technology.…

The entire purpose of this paper is to find out the answer to the question: How does technology affect our daily lives?” Many different sources said many different things, however they somehow all connected at one point or another. “Body and Soul: Beware of Digital Gluttony,” by Kate Wicker, suggests that technology is now apart of us and our lives and there isn't much we can do to change it. “Technology is a real part of our lives, we are living in an “ICulture” whether we like it or not.” (Wicker. Pg.21) She has made it clear that she believes that whether we see technology in a positive or negative way, it’s here to stay. However, Williesha Morris, author of “Technology Addiction: Breaking the Chain,” says something a little different. “If you're an executive over the age of 30-35, you remember a time when such devices didn’t exist. They weren’t needed then, so why are they so crucial now?” (Morris.Pg.17) Morris seems to believe that we don't need them today, or she's at least questioning why society relies on technology as much as it does.…

I find that being a teenager living in a first world country in the 21st century, it is nearly impossible to not be reliant on technology. Our whole life is ran by computers from our ride to school all the way to what makes our coffee in the morning. I find that even if I don't want to, I will never not be reliant on technology. Each and every morning I wake up and turn off my alarm which means the very first thing I do in the morning is use technology, all the way until the last thing I do at night which would either be turning off my lamp from reading a book or finishing an episode on netflix, technology is the first thing I use from when I close my eyes until I open them.…

Are We Digital Dummies? then examines how much our society uses technology in various different situations. They show how technology has even taken over politics. Politicians use it as a communication tool because it gives them access to the best information at all times. They even interviewed one Liberal MP who told them that each MP’s office is given four blackberries to ensure that they are on time and that they get their spin on the stories out first. Just recently, our class had the assignment of 24 hours unplugged where we all had to go without technology for 24 hours. I can’t honestly say that I enjoyed my unplugged experience. Television is not a big thing to me, although there are a few shows I do enjoy. The internet, computer, and phone I use daily, more than once, so that was a really tough thing for me to handle. My day was completely different in terms of logistics, as I use the computer daily for my school work and email, so I had a lot of difficulty being able to do any school work, or work in general. I also use the phone to contact my family, friends, and boyfriend. I did not enjoy this aspect of living “unplugged”. I definitely hated the fact that I could not do any work or talk to anyone. Plus I am nosey so I love to watch the news and know what is going on daily, and I couldn’t do that either. I would say that it was easy when I first began, but as the hours went on, I got bored and I would have to say that I gave up. I don’t think psychological effects really played a big part, honestly. It is clear to me now, that technology definitely plays a big role in our society, maybe even bigger than people tend to realize.…
