Google Effects On Memory: An Argumentative Analysis
Christian Lous Lange once said “technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” Everyone uses some sort of technology in some shape or form. Even though society loves technology so much and it makes thing easier it is also harming us as well. Technology is harmful to society because it affects the brain, causes health problems, and increases bullying.

Some may say that technology is the best thing that happened in the world but it is not. Technology is changing the way brains are functioning. Technology affects memory, attention, what people focus on and sleep cycles. Based on Daniel Wegner's study “Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips” people with access to search engines, remember fewer facts and less information because they know they have these engines as readily available shortcuts. There are many resources to remember different things for us that we no longer attempt to remember even the basic things. Telephone numbers don’t have to be memorized because they are stored in cell phones. Directions are no longer remembered because of GPs devices. What about someone’s mental health. Technology is affecting mental health as well. Stress is one issue with technology. Sometimes when a person doesn't get a reply or gets a reply hours later they often begin to stress themselves and overturn the situation. Overthinking a situation or misreading a person's feeling has led to people being harassed and or being disrespected. The person being harassed and or disrespected may begin to have lower self esteem and many other insecurities. In addition misreading others feelings may also affect relationships because you just simply misunderstand things that were said and done.     In the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid? What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains,” the author Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet has detrimental effects by altering the way we comprehend and the way our brain functions. Carr’s mind is changing because he is not thinking the way he used to think. He used to love reading books and articles, but now he can barely get through two or three pages because his “concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages” (Carr 138).
