When people start putting up Christmas trees and hanging up Christmas decorations, we know that the holiday season is around the corner. It’s this time of the year to see one of the Christmas traditions with your family and friends – The Nutcracker. I had a wonderful time seeing this ballet, performed by the Central Ohio Youth Ballet (COYB), at Midland theatre in Newark, Ohio, on the Thanksgiving weekend with my host family, and I was amazed by the great work and efforts that the performers had created. No wonder why The Nutcracker has became the timeless symbol of Christmas around the world. The two-act ballet followed the original story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. From the warm yellow light for a Christmas party on Christmas Eve, to the hue light with snow falling, the lighting and special effect played an important role in completing the world suggested by the ballet. And I must say that the part where lighting and special effects did it best job was the performance of the Prince, Clara and many other dancers when they get to the Land of Sweets, when the snow is falling, creating a wonderful and magical images. This was the only time that they used special effects with a white theme - white dresses, white snow, white and hue lights. What a nice ending to Act I!
The world of The Nutcracker can’t be completed without the music score from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a famous Russian composer who also wrote the Swan Lake. The two main sources of hearing for the audience are from the storyteller, and the classical music from Tchaikovsky. One of his most famous works for the Nutcracker is Op. 71a 11. b. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The soothing music goes well with all the graceful and beautiful movements. The Nutcracker and its music is surely a great introduction to ballet and classical music to a newbie like
