The Miracles of Science in Islam
IAW 2015 Mini Essay

THE MIRACLE OF SCIENCE IN ISLAM

You were once a non-existing being. You were nothing. Then a miracle happened. You were created. From a drop of miracle swimming to another miracle, a miracle was formed. You were once unable to see, unable to touch, unable to speak the voice of your heart. Slowly you turned into a clot of blood, regenerating into bones, coated again with blood and flesh, growing cells upon cells, turning yourself into a tiny creature that dwells in that tiny space - dark but comforting, it keeps you safe. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, your heart started to beat - a rhythmic harmony with the beating of the one who carried you.

You were fed, you were cared, you were breathing through another tube of miracle attached to your umbilical cord. You heard faint voices, hums and melodies - you wanted to make sense of the language foreign to your ears, but all you could do was listen. You started to move slowly, you weren’t sure what you were doing at first, but you started kicking, and you felt yourself stealing a sharp breath along with the person who carried you as she laughed happily at your first gesture and contact - you weren’t born yet but you were loved.

More days passed, and you wanted to break free from the little home that surprisingly still keeps you alive. You squeezed yourself through the space that ultimately brought you out from that comforting place that has kept you for nine months - you were confused by the sudden light, the sudden voices, the sudden touch. You let out a sound, unfamiliar to your ears at first but then you felt the vibration coming from your throat, you were crying. You were born and you were alive.

You weren’t sure about what was happening next. You were bathed and clothed, you tasted a cool drop of something sweet at the tip of your tongue and someone held you affectionately and brought your ears closer to his lips. Suddenly everything was still, and all you heard was the most

On a quiet Sunday morning at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison, Indiana, I was welcomed into this world via c-section. With my mother completely unconscious, my father was first to hold my whopping nine-pound six-ounce body. I was bald and twenty and a half inches in length. I arrived at 7:57 on January 8, 1999, and the weather was below freezing and snowy. For my mother, giving birth was an occurrence that she never intended to endure. Before my mother had me at the age of thirty nine, she went through multiple abortions. She had never wanted kids, but my father convinced her to…

    1. Islamic hospitals and ‘bimaristans’ were organised and set up to try to cure their patients and give them treatment instead of simply caring for them. They offered medical care to everyone whether they were rich or poor or of any religion, race or gender. This meant the doctors were constantly working almost constantly on site of the hospitals so they gained more experience very quickly. Also it gave medical students that were studying there a chance to train when they worked along side the doctors. The hospitals also let people learn and gain medical knowledge, as they set up a medical school and a library for people interested in medicine and health. This way the hospitals could employ more properly trained doctors and nurses. The hospitals over all were very organised as they had wards for specific diseases and even set up hospitals for the mentally ill which were called ‘maristans’. Islamic doctors moved away from superstitions and religious causes and cures for disease and looked at natural ways to treat patients. Compared to the Christian views on mentally ill people being possessed they saw them as victims of an unfortunate illness. So over all Islamic hospitals were much more organised than Christian hospitals as they cared for all, gave treatments and had moved away from religious views on disease.…

The Islamics had many great achievements but I think their greatest one was building a trade route through their empire. Muslims were able to make such great contributions because they were open minded and had a high tolerance for different cultures. Because of this, they got to learn from the different countries they took over such as Greece, Rome, and India. They had so many different ideas and all that knowledge led to them making great achievements that lasted and made an impact on the world. Islamics had quite a few achievements in math. One being, as stated in Document 1, that they relied on mathematicians to calculate prayer times and also the direction of the Mecca. Both of these were very important to them because their culture was…

Sunni, Shiite, and Sufi are three branches of Islam. The Shiite and Sunni’s were the first really major division of the Islamic religion. This division was the result of a political argument over who should precede Muhammed. Sunni’s name means tradition and they believed the legitimacy of the Orthodox caliphates, and based everything off those beliefs. Sunni’s believe that Muhammad did not designate a successor. Now Shiite’s get their name from the word Shia, which means faction. They believe that Muhammad did leave a successor and it was the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad named, Ali. They do not believe the same thing as Sunnis and disagree and do not get along with them. Now Sufi’s are” a contemplative school of Islam that aims to develop an individual 's consciousness of God though chanting, recitation of litanies, music and physical movement (SCRUGGS, 2010, para. )” Sufis find the importance by approaching the inner meaning of god through mysticism. They want to find the hidden meanings of the world they do not read or follow the Qur’an as strictly and as a result have closer relationships to other religions (SCRUGGS,…

The being pregnant part was actually really awesome. I was hungry all the time and got to eat pretty much anything and everything to my hearts content. I was always sleepy but best of all never did I get nauseous, which oh my gosh I was so happy for! You get to go to the doctor ALOT and the list of the things you can do is a short story compared to the novel that is the list of things you cant do. The very first feelings you feel of the baby moving feels like you have butterflies in your stomach and getting to hear the heart beat, now that is one of the best sounds in the world. I read What to Expect When You're Expecting like it was the bible. It tells you everything about the baby, their progress, what they look like at each stage and I was obsessed with it. At about five months that's when you get to find out the sex. That was the day I couldn't wait for. I wanted a girl so bad! I tried hard not to get my hopes up. Don't get me wrong I would love my child either way, but ever since that first day, that second line I couldn't stop thinking the word girl, girl, GIRL! I knew it, even though I told myself I didn't. My heart sank at first when the ultra sound nurse said “Do you see these three dots?” I instantly thought “okay cool its a boy, good thing I still have time to pick out a name” but as the nurse went on she said “congratulations your having a girl.” My mom who was with me just exploded into pure excitement, she had her three grandsons now the first granddaughter, and me, well I felt like I won the lottery. Picking out a name was also pretty easy seeing as how I already picked it out when I was 15, Riley, after my grandfather. I never got to meet him but I've always heard what an amazing person he was and I was in love with his name, but I had to make it its own so I decided to spell it Rylee. After that its pretty much 4 long fat months of you putting baby furniture together, buying clothes,…

As a result of many new astronomical discoveries throughout the seventeenth century, it was clear science and religion greatly contradicted each other. Followed by the questioned findings of Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei believed the sun was situated motionless in the center of the universe while the earth rotated on its axis, all the while revolving around the sun. This idea, though scientifically proven to be correct, completely opposed the underlying structure of the universe and heavens as originally stated in the Holy Bible. In his “Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina,” Galileo explained to his subject how what was found true through physical findings were not in fact directly coincided with matters of faith. Unlike what was stated in the Bible, Galileo felt as though faith and science were two separate entities, and should be kept apart. Naturally, Galileo’s scientific findings sent the Catholic world into an uproar. As a result of the craziness that ensued from his astronomical discoveries within the theologian society, Galileo believed theologians should not have been allowed to be involved in the world of science during the 17th century in his “Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina.”…

I was born on February 24, 1995 during the morning as day broke, coming into this world two month before I was expected. An undeveloped baby born 4 pounds 9 ounces, falling out of the normal range for the weight of a newborn. Moreover, I would be born without the sucking sensation, something crucial to a newborn in early development. When I was born my mother would not hold me because of these factors in her fear of losing another child. My brother whom I get part of my name from was diagnosed as stillbirth only after a few hours of having breath inside his body. At any point I should have not survived from mother who would not hold her child, being born premature, being underweight, and having no sucking sensation. It was perseverance that…

Upon arriving at the hospital everything happened so quickly. David checked me into the maternity triage I was wheeled into a room and quickly examined. Nurses quickly gathered around me hooking me up to monitors, placing an ID band on my wrist and I see David out of the corner of my eye. Before I realize it I am being wheeled upstairs to the delivery unit. In the mist of all the chaos I over head the nurses give direct orders to page the on call doctor and to tell the nurses upstairs to prepare a room STAT.
