Advanced Veterinary Clinic: A Short Story
Awoken by my blaring alarm clock at its usual time, I prepared for the school day as I normally would; shrugged on my habitual polo and khakis, brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and headed for the door. However, as I dragged myself down the steps, I stumbled upon my 14 year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Nina, struggling. Dazed and confused, I investigated the situation to discover she had managed to wrap an excess string from a blanket tightly around her hind leg. Panicking, I raced to my kitchen, grabbed scissors and cut her loose. I called my parents, who were at the time caring for my dementia-stricken 94 year-old Bubbie and informed them of the recent events. My dad joined me as we rushed her to an animal hospital in attempt to salvage her leg. Tapping my feet against the white linoleum floors, I awaited our turn in the emergency room (some “emergency” rush, huh?). Finally, the vet consoled us and proclaimed our baby

She understood our situation and knew of organizations that would support our cause. She suggested we call the Advanced Veterinary Complex, a mere 15 minutes from our home, in search of assistance. A very generous man quickly returned our call, declared that he was the owner and founder of this hospital, and agreed to accept our (affordable) offer of $1,000. Today, Nina is running around just as she used to and wears the same smile on her face as she did before the surgery. My mom and I will never be able to thank Dr. Benson for what he did, but further, we will never stop priding ourselves for embarking on our endeavor to remedy Nina. After hearing our initial options from the first vet hospital, euthanasia only seemed a grim second away. However, we raised our voices in defense of our dearly loved Nina, and can contently watch her grow as she adjusts to her new lifestyle as a
