A Modern Twist on History A few months ago, I remember my sister, Kate, doing a report on the Hamilton writer, and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda. I remember her telling me all about this one person, who literally, is on his way to making billions. Lin fascinated me, the way he wrote the broadway hit, Hamilton, in seven years, how he dropped out of highschool and began to work at McDonald’s to gain a living. I bet everyone from his home town wishes that they were him. He’s become as famous as any writer or actor. I began to find this love of Lin and Hamilton before that, but this report Kate was doing inspired me to learn more. Even now, Kate and I will sit either in the car, our rooms, basically anywhere and sing the Hamilton songs for hours. Hamilton is just so more diverse than any musical the …show more content…
Why aren’t these classics being promoted anymore? The Fiddler on the Roof is a true story, and set in Anatevka in 1905. The story is about focuses on a family, and their life as Jewish people. Obviously, this is set right before Adolf Hitler took over Germany. The small village of Anatevka is mostly Jewish people, however some Russians live there to ‘control’ the Jewish community. In The Fiddler on the Roof’s revival, Dave Quinn writes, “...with 1,761 seats to fill every night (That’s over 400 more than “Hamilton” has to sell at the Richard Rodgers Theater by comparison” (Quinn 1). The revival had 464 performances. The show grossed less than 50 percent of its expected earn of $1.5 million at the box office. On the other hand, The Sound of Music was a Broadway hit too. The Sound of Music is about a family during the reign of the Nazis. The Sound of Music won the Best Musical Tony in 2014, and Mary Martin won the Best Actress Tony also in 2014.     “In the Heights” was his first musical to reach Broadway. The musical was about a young man, played by Lin, growing up as a teenager in the rough parts of Puerto Rico. He had used a lot of his grandmother’s stories to really get a connection with what Puerto Rico had been like.     This Broadway play has been around for a long time. It captured people’s attention from the clothes they wore, to the beautiful melody from Frankie Valli. This play is set in the 1960’s; it is based on Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Through a musical it talks about their lives, where they grew up, and the struggles they went through to get to fame. They came from nothing, living in a poor area, in a little shack house, to fame and wealth. Their sweet voices took them far in life, accomplishing many of their goals, to scoring not one but a couple hit songs like, “Sherry,” “Big Girl’s don’t cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” “Oh What a Night,” and so on. When I first walked in I didn’t know what to expect, except hearing how good this play was. My thoughts were a boring play to sit through and get it over with but it captured my eyes from the moment they started singing. Their unique voices were so calm, sweet and inviting that you wanted to just listen or sing along but never was there a dull moment. Not only was the music capturing but the clothes and the colorful set opened up your eyes. They chose the right setting, the perfect performers to make this show a phenomenon. Looking at everyone’s faces how they were enjoying themselves and people just not taking their eyes off the set really showed you that this performance was a hit. Seeing a group accomplish so much from where they came from sets the right message to those who are in the same situation. Not only is this an amazing show but also an inspirational story to many who do not have the money to go far with their gifts but can work hard and still accomplish what they did.     Even though Atticus is just seen as a lawyer in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", Jem and Scout, his kids, come to realize what kind of a great father he is. Many people think a gun is used to kill innocent people or animals. Atticus shot this mad dog because if he had not, the dog would have been danger towards others. Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem "forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time" (Lee 98). This demonstrates that Scout and Jem come to understand and value Atticus when they see him come and kill the dog. Before this innocent happened they thought that Atticus was just a man who solved cases, but they never knew about the other side of their father. Atticus in this story is a lawyer who defends a black male named Tom Robinson. One of Atticus’s reason to defend Tom Robinson was that if he didn’t then he couldn’t be able to hold up his head in town and couldn’t represent this county in the legislature. He also couldn’t even tell Scout or Jem not to do something again. Jem and Scout come to admire Atticus when they figure out that Atticus is standing up for what he believes in even though most of the whole county doesn’t. Finally Atticus speaks to Jem about courage. He tries to develop that relationship with Jem by making him see things the way he does. For instance he talks about Mrs. Dubose to Jem and says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (112). This proves that Jem comes to admire Atticus through his speech because Atticus is using another person as an example then himself. He is using Mrs. Dubose as an example and tried to make him understand that she died beholden to nothing and no one.     The Wizard of Oz is a classic, a legend, and a children’s story that will never grow old. Quotes from the story such as “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” “Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my,” and “There’s no place like home,” are ones that will always pop into our heads when someone says “The Wizard of Oz.” These are the lines that are related right away to the famous story. Dorothy’s long, adventurous trip down the Yellow Brick Road is something that everyone loves to read and watch. It is a story that touches all of us. The 1939 MGM film interpretation of the 1900 published book written by L. Frank Baum, brought this story to life for all of those who were unable to go to the 1902 stage performance. I’ll never forget watching the movie for the first time. Seeing the screen turn from black and white, to beautiful, stunning colors was amazing. Hearing Judy Garland as Dorothy sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the first time, left me with a lasting memory. It was as if I felt what she wasfeeling at that moment; that there was a better place...The predominant theme of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is self-sufficiency. The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion all seek external magic to give them qualities they already possess but fail to recognize. When the travelers come to a wide ditch (chapter seven), the Cowardly Lion volunteers to try jumping over it. If he can make it, he reasons, he can carry each of his friends across safely. Discussing the possibility of falling into the ditch, the Cowardly Lion responds, "'I am terribly afraid of falling, myself but I suppose there is nothing to do but try it.'" The Lion does not realize that courage is acting despite fear, not acting in the absence of fear. In a scene at the end of chapter six, the reader sees both the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow demonstrating the very qualities they feel they are lacking.
