Thank You M Am, By Langston Hughes
“Thank you M’am”

In the story “Thank you M’am”, by Langston Hughes, a 15 year old boy named Roger attempts to steal Mrs. Jones's purse, however Mrs. Jones furiously caught him, after a few of questions Mrs. Jones quickly changed her thoughts on Roger, after asking him if there was anybody home to tell him to wash his dirty face, she became nicer to Roger. From that moment and on she started to care about Roger more and more. She decided to bring him home to teach him a lesson about the importance of being well-behaved, She also brought home because, Roger reminded her, of her childhood and she didn't want him to do the same mistakes as she did.

In the story there is a lot of textual evidence that shows that Mrs. Jones wanted to teach Roger a lesson. One example is shown on page 7, lines 45-47: “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?” This quote really shows how Mrs. Jones wants to help Roger become a well-behaved boy, by teaching him good manners so he would behave himself, and not do illegal things like stealing things… It also shows how Mrs. Jones cares about him because she asked her if he’s hungry. Later on in the story she gave him half of her 10 cent cake, which is really generous knowing that she gave it to someone that was trying to steal her purse.

“I have done things to which I would not tell you,son--neither tell God, if he didn’t already know.” This shows that at sometime in her life, Mrs. Jones did things that she regrets doing. And is trying to help him avoid the mistakes that she did. And help him become a “normal”

However, at first Roger tends to go to unnoticed. He only spoke when necessary and “kept to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy” (Golding 22). We come to the conclusion that this secrecy is due to him being evil, in the sense he likes to hurt people. Roger thrives off the pain of others. This secrecy allows him to do things in which he doesn’t have to obtain feedback from others. He differs from Jack…

Choosing to follow under the unrestricted guidance of Jack is most likely one of the most influential factors in Roger’s transformation. The sadistic nature of Roger can be clearly seen near the end of the novel, when he reveals his true colours by intentionally murdering Piggy: “High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever…the rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee…Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across that square, red rock in the sea” (222). This describes Roger’s transition to savagery as a result of following under the leadership of Jack and therefore not being kept in check through the laws and standards of society. After carrying out the murder, Roger fails to show any signs of remorse and continues to remain composed, completely unaffected by the death of Piggy. Roger demonstrates the absolute extent at which flaws can affect an individual’s behaviour and action in the absence of…

Roger was never the nicest guy on the island, but it really showed when Roger decided to show his power over the liluns on the island. Henry, one of the little boys on the island was sitting, having fun, doing nothing to bother Roger, when suddenly Roger started throwing rocks at him: “[He] gathered a handful of stoned and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not to throw. Here visible not strong, was the taboo of old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policeman and law,” stated Roger. Roger used intense force to show his power over the little boy; he felt the urge to torment the lilun. As civilization has not yet faded, he knew not to threw to rocks directly at him, like there were imaginary adults standing there. Again, rules are not present, therefore no one can tell Roger that this is wrong and cruel. Golding provided this piece of information to show that cruelty takes place without a responsible adult to tell them right or…

Roger is a savage, disobedient, out of control tribal. Roger’s initial build up is subtle because of his past boundaries from the old world. “Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry-threw it to miss” (62). Still abiding by the rules of his former life, Roger’s civility can still be seen early in the story. Unfortunately, Roger loses control of his…

Whitman wrote, “I hear America singing.’’ The purpose of the poem was to tell the reader how the American dream was going when Whitman wrote this poem. Langston Hughes wrote,” Let America be America again.’’ The purpose of this poem was to tell the reader that not everyone could have lived the american dream. What i have gathered they can both agree on that they want america to get better. Since, “ I hear america singing,”and “Let America be America again” are similar and different. Though we didn’t want to go anywhere with Miss Moore our parents would put hairs into some kind of weird shape and crisp up our clothes, so we would look presentable to travel with Miss Moore. She would look like she was, going to church but she never went. That was one of the reasons why the adults talk about her when she isn’t there. Miss Moore brings us gifts but our parents would be, embarrassed to tell her to leave. She’d been to college and was a woman who “ gives back” to her community by saying it’s merely virtuous , that she should take responsibility for the children’s education. She cares for the children in the community and she’s not related by marriage or blood. Nevertheless Miss Moore wasn’t related to us, but we saw that she was the solely one in the community that indeed cared genuinely for us. Though occasionally she can be…
