Anna Baines

The author Anna Baines is a freelance journalist. Abstract The travel and tourism industry is starting to exploit technology. This is going to change the nature of the services offered, and the nature of work within the industry. Employers and employees may have different perceptions about the likely benefits of technology. Discusses the changes at the “higher” and “lower” organisational levels and suggests that the industry is only partially prepared for the changes ahead.

The hotel and tourism industry is labour intensive – and proud of its ability to offer “personal service”. However, it is apparent that technology has moved into a number of support areas: the “back office” reservation systems used in almost all hotels are a prime example. Other, perhaps less visible applications of technology include the catering industry’s use of such methods as “cook-chill” and microwave cooking. Will the travel industry continue to exploit technology for back office and backroom tasks, taking the more mundane and repetitive tasks off the front-of-house staff so that they can pamper us even more? Or will the travel industry of the future move technology into the front-of-house and the frontline? Will we all take for granted, ubiquitous computers, techno-beds with remote controls, pre-packed and cooked meals and guest-room telephones with inbuilt world wide web access? The answer may be important to us all. The hotel and travel industry is very large and still growing. It makes a significant, and in some cases enormous, contribution to the gross domestic product of many countries and now provides employment for one out of ten workers around the world, or some 212 million people. By the year 2010, tourism, measured in terms of international arrivals, is expected to double to more than 1,000 million (one billion), while the number of jobs in the

Individual businesses must work in partnership with other organisations in order to be successful. Tourism is a very competitive and complex sector and many companies develop links with other businesses as a way of maximising profits. If for example Thomas cook didn’t work with other hotels, insurance companies, company picks up on arrival, Thomas cook wouldn’t make any profits, as customers wouldn’t want to book a holiday with a company who don’t take out insurance, which if an accident happened they would have thousands to pay with no compensation. Also if customers were to book with a company who didn’t book with certain hotels, you could end up anywhere without any information about it. Whereas if Thomas cook have interrelationships with hotels they are more likely to be safer and nicer hotels, meaning customers trust Thomas cook knowing the hotel is good one. This increases profit due to more repeat purchases.…

The hotel industry, (despite its importance to the UK economy) has not received the attention that it deserves from the central government at Downing Street. A report by the British Hospitality Association in 2010 showed that it has grown over the years to contribute 45 billion pounds to the UK economy. The hotel industry also employs about 3.64 million people both directly and indirectly making it the fifth largest industry in the UK in terms of labour force (British Hospitality Association, 2010). The hotel industry is regarded by Downing Street to be a segment of the leisure industry to which it is strongly related. It is pertinent to state here that users of hotel facilities can be categorized into mainly three groups: Leisure travellers (about 44%), Business travellers (about 45%) and Organizations (11%) like the London 2012 committee and perhaps London 2018 committee if a certain Octopus by the name of Paul is right.…

Hospitality and tourism industry represent 5% of global Gross Domestic Product, it is also responsible for over 235 million jobs globally or one in every 12 jobs worldwide (UNWTO, 2013). Furthermore, it is the fourth largest export sector in the world (UNWTO, 2013). These facts prove that hospitality and tourism is a really large and promising industry. According to Cassee (1983), hospitality is ‘a harmonious combination of tangible (products) and intangible (service) components; food and beverages, beds, ambience and environment, and attitude of the staff’. Hospitality industry’s main segments are lodging operations and food and beverages operations.…
