The Loadstone Rock, Guilt, and Bad Decisions In chapter 24 of A Tale of Two Cities, called “Drawn to the Loadstone Rock”, Mr.Lorry is going to France for Tellson’s Bank and after Charles Darnay “delivers” a letter to the Marquis (which is himself) he decides that he needs to go France. The passage that I have chosen is from this chapter and is the second full paragraph on page 252. It starts with “Yes” and ends with “and good name.” The passage is explaining why Charles Darnay needs to go to France through the use of an allusion and a deeper insight into Darnay’s mind. Then, the Loadstone Rock pulls out all of the nails from the ship, and the ship sinks and leaves the two on an island. Dickens states in the novel,”Like the mariner in the old story, the winds and streams had driven him within the influence of the Loadstone Rock, and it was drawing him to itself, and he must go.” (Dickens 252). This quote demonstrates that Darnay’s situation is very similar to the Loadstone Rock in the fact that he is being drawn to France similar to the ship being drawn to the rock. Also, Darnay’s situation is similar to the Loadstone Rock because both situations could end badly after they have been drawn in. In “The Third Calender’s Tale.”, the prince and the calendar were left on an island after the Loadstone Rock drew all of the nails out of their ship, and in Darnay’s situation, he is going to face the revolution that plans to kill him, even though Charles does not know that.
