At one time or another, everyone on this Earth will go through a challenging circumstance that they must survive. This could be as small as a bad grade on a test or having to do something you don’t want to do. But these situations can also be as big as the loss of a loved-one or even being stranded on an island. So during these times, how does one survive their Circumstance? An individual can survive any circumstance through hope, resilience, and an understanding of the importance of life. A survivor's mind understands the importance of life, and the beauty of a beating heart. A survivor will do anything it takes to stay alive and will never do anything that puts the life of someone else in danger. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys stranded on the island fail to understand the importance of life. A great amount of resilience is shown by Kayla Montgomery, a long-distance runner with Multiple Sclerosis. Despite her loss of feeling in your legs, Kayla fights back and overcomes her challenge. Kayla said, “I make myself do it, I tell myself, ‘I know you’re tired and you can’t feel anything and it’s hard but you’re going to finish this.’ And then I do” (Crouse).
