Summary: The Not So Good Brother
The Not So Good Brother

When you have a little brother, it can be easy to take advantage of him, especially when your brother is crippled. Brother was a bad brother for reasons, and the reasons he was a good brother doesn’t cancel out the bad reasons. Brother was a good brother for teaching Doodle movements like walking and swimming, but also a bad brother for pushing him too hard and taking advantage of him. Brother was a good brother because he was teaching Doodle some movement lessons like walking, and running. In this story, Brother was a good brother because he teaches him to walk, run, swim, fight and climb trees. This way Doodle learns the basic movements of life. “I’m going to teach you to walk, Doodle” (Hurst 2). Brother teaches

Brother is accountable for Doodle’s death since he was warned by the doctors not to push him, but he disregarded it and tried to make him like a “normal” boy. As Brother thinks back to him and Doodle walking home from Old Woman’s Swamp, he confessed, “The faster I walked the faster he walked, so I began to run” (Hurst 394). Brothers walking pace displays how he walked faster, just to make Doodle walk faster. Since Brother did this he pushed Doodle too far, putting his life in danger. Brother teaches Doodle how to swim and row, he made Doodle “swim until he turned blue and row until he couldn’t lift an oar” (Hurst 391). Brother wants Doodle to learn faster, so he makes him practice heavily. If Doodle hadn’t of had the heart disabilities that…

The short story written by James Hurst “The Scarlet Ibis” explains that a selfish deed is not always bad. The story starts with the narrator, Brother, and his little brother Doodle. When Doodle was being born, he was red, and all shriveled up, a disappointment, and everyone thought he would die. When their mother always told Brother to take Doodle with him everywhere he went, Brother is embarrassed to be seen with his 5 year-old brother, who couldn’t walk, but had to be pulled everywhere in a mini go-cart. The narrator made it his mission to set out to teach Doodle to walk and everything else, so he wasn’t behind everyone in his grade. One day they went to Horsehead Landing, so narrator could teach Doodle how to swim but there came a lightning storm.…

This is shown when he clutches Doodle’s body in a sign of remorse. Where he had often left Doodle behind in the past, he hangs on to Doodle’s corpse and tries to shield it from the rain and the world. Since Brother changed his action, it is shown his feelings for Doodle changes from childness resentment to shame for his actions. The tone of guilt also shows in the afterthought in the story after Brother finishes telling an event, like when he reveals that he “[taught Doodle how to walk] for himself… and that Doodle walked only because [he] was ashamed of having a crippled brother” (182-184). Because he regrets treating Doodle the way he did, he laments about his past actions and paints an ashamed tone over the events. By showing the feeling changes of Brother, Hurst makes the story more…

Even though I have a hard time relating to people in general, or story book characters, I relate to this character. Doodle’s older brother is different than most characters and experiences things that change his personality throughout the story. Judging on that he blames himself for things that really aren’t his fault, always pushes his brother to push himself and to go on past his ability, mentally and physically, and he goes with his brother everywhere and spends lots of time with him, shows that we are alike in many ways. However, I relate to Doodle’s older…

The brother also didn't want to be burdened by his brother's disabilities he said: "When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set but to teach him." He wanted to show Doodle the world that he sees the place that he lives that makes him so happy and that he feels that it is the prettiest place on the planet. Doodle doesn't get to see it all because he is not able to go swimming in the ponds and isn't able to run in the fields that his brother does on a daily basis. The brother sets out to teach him to walk and won't give up until Doodle is able to walk on his own without his go-cart. "I took him by the arms and stood up. He collapsed onto the grass like a half-empty flour sack. It was as if he had no bones in his little legs." In the end I think that the brother ended up learning more than Doodle did because he was given the gift of patience and in the end he still has to deal with the fact that he "killed" his…

Doodle was pushed too hard by; his older brother would continue to say to him, “Doodle, do you want to learn to walk?”(page182) My opinion on ‘the brother is he is very selfish.’ He is ashamed to have Doodle as a brother because he can’t play or act like a normal boy/brother. He wants a brother he can play with. So that is why he takes Doodle to Old Woman Swamp to help he practice walking.…

Even though Brother saw Doodle as a crazy brother that you would see in your dreams he was mean to him by making him do things he didn't want to. Too much pride had ridden over Brother as he did his best to change Doodle into an ordinary boy for he was ashamed of him even if it meant he was cruel and harsh in the process. Another example is after Brother had finally taught Doodle to successfully walk on his own. The narrator says “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(3). What Brother had done for Doodle was great, but Brother had been mean to him in the process of teaching Doodle how to do anything like a normal boy. The narrator had too much pride for himself instead of his brother that everything he did was for himself simply because he was embarrassed. The short story “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst displays that too much pride has us treat our loved ones in a cruel…

He was going to teach his brother to walk because he loved him. “ I’m going to teach you to walk… if you don’t keep trying you’ll never learn.” The brother really wanted to help his brother to walk. But the real reason why he wanted to teach his brother to walk was he didn’t want to be ashamed of for having a crippled little brother. “Doodle walked because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This proves that he never wanted to teach his brother to walk because of love, he just didn’t want to be made fun of. This piece of evidence clearly shows that he was ashamed of having a crippled brother so he was going to teach his brother to be a normal kid.…

Doodle's brother wanted a brother for the sole purpose of his entertainment, and Doodle did not fit in his brother's mold. "It was bad enough having an invalid brother", says the brother, "but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him..." (345). This statement by Doodle's brother shows his interest in having a brother is not that of love, not that of mental companionship, but a brother that he could use for personal entertainment. Doodle's brother wanted a brother who was just like him. A brother that could take care of himself and go on adventures with his brother, a brother like Doodle was not good enough for him, thus showing his level of insensitivity and selfishness. On page 346 Doodle's brother takes Doodle up to where his casket is and makes him touch it. Doodle's brother would only do this to reiterate his control on Doodle and Doodle's actions. This control which Doodle's brother wanted, gave him enjoyment; enjoyment to boss around his brother, enjoyment to boss a crippled kid. Doodle's brother has a mean streak in him, and from that mean streak he finds enjoyment, and throughout the whole story that streak continually comes up, and in the end, Doodle's…

The other trait the older brother represents is being shameful. He was ashamed of having a crippled brother, so he taught Doodle how to walk, not for Doodle's own convenience, but for himself. The narrator was also shameful when he ran ahead of Doodle and Doodle died due to his weak physical condition.…

I didn’t want the day to end. I dreaded going back to my dad’s house and going through the cycle all over again. The shift from a familiar environment, then being removed from it became frustrating and tiring. As a child, I had this perfect image of having two parents who show compassion but not in my situation. I got lost going back and forth, I started to lose myself, leaving a piece of my identity behind every time I left one of my parent’s houses. As the years went by, I didn’t really know who I was, I lost myself along the way and didn’t know how to get back to the person I was before. This happy person from many years ago was slowly drifting away from the difficult situations I encountered along the way. As I was losing the pieces of myself, my brother was the little boy who put the puzzle back together.…
