Student Affairs Personal Statement
Being a student affairs professional has always been my long term career goal because I believe that my drive and professional motivations come from a sincere dedication to student success and improving the student experiences both in and out of the classroom. I considered furthering my education in several different areas such as communications and history. However, none of them aligned with my passion for working hands on with students, like higher education administration. As a first-generation college student, I understand how important it is to have someone in administration guide you along the different processes. Having to go through the struggles of not knowing the basics, such as what to do for housing or academic advising I have a strong need to guide students in the right direction.
Throughout my college experiences I have prided myself on helping students develop coherent values and ethical standards by supporting them in their learning experiences, and providing a nurturing environment that fosters creativity. My extensive background working with students has taught me that adequately building supportive and inclusive communities helps develop and maximize academic achievement amongst students. When it came to my student staff I played an active role in encouraging their intellectual curiosity and developed a genuine interest in how my managing skills and work ethics could help them flourish in their future professions. My staff awarded me with a “Soccer Mom” award because I valued my employees and took pride in the quality of work that we do while promoting a work as a team environment. I enjoyed the mixture of authority that this position allotted because I was able to learn how to supervise student employees and had the opportunity to work and mentor other
