Ethical Actions Worksheet

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

Was there anything in either the University of Phoenix Student Code of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not?

To be honest none of the code of conduct or Student Code of Academic Integrity surprised me. Maybe it is because of my military time and having to adhere to such strike code of conduct. I was pleased to see that there was a high standard to maintain. I think when you have a good code of conduct like that it allows students to better learn. If there wasn't a good code of conduct in place then the environment for learning would be poor and students wouldn't feel comfortable learning. A good code of conduct also allows for a low stress environment to be had. When there is less stress its easier to learn and understand what is being taught to us.

What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community?

I think the behaviors that University of Phoenix is looking for are the same things I learned in the military. The army thought me the core values, which as I read the University of Phoenix Student code of Conduct and the Student Code of Academic integrity they seem one and the same. We are taught integrity and honesty, which are things I see that the University of Phoenix is looking for.

Why are the Student Code of Conduct and Student Code of Academic Integrity important to you and the University of Phoenix learning community?

The Student Code of Academic Integrity is important to me because it sets the guidelines on how we are supposed to act. It teaches respect, not only respect for yourself but respect for your fellow students and teachers. It teaches ownership of your words and actions. By teaching that it helps someone

One thing that I greatly appreciated, when I was deciding which univeristy to attend, was how well Texas A&M expressed the Aggie Code of Honor. "Aggies do not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do." A very simple saying, but one that is heard and seen all around campus. It is tied to the university as much as the word "Howdy". It is great that this motto of academic integrity is already stiched to Texas A&M because its easier for professors and the university to promote academic integrity. Professors and the university need to continue to explicitly preach the Aggie Code of Honor throughout the semester as a reminder for students. Also one thing that students are not knowlegeable of are the consequences of acting acadebmically dishonest.…

In the wake of numerous cheating scandals, such as those at the University of Virginia and Harvard, many people have began to question the effectiveness of honor codes (sources C, D). Honor codes can be defined as a set of rules implemented in a school that are based around morals that define both acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. While many feel as though such guidelines are necessary in maintaining a schools’ dignity, others believe that honor codes are impossible to enforce. Honor codes should not be enforced because they are too harsh, unrealistic, and put innocent students in uncomfortable social situations.…

Source F explains the results of a study in which two thirds of high school students reported seeing one or more cases of cheating in the last year. Source F also reveals that “there is growing evidence many students take these habits with them to college.” So, by setting the standard that lying and cheating are wrong early on in life, you can help prepare students and prevent them from forming bad habits. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” By giving an honor code, the school can ensure that students are being taught moral values. These values can then be used by students both in and out of the…
