Strengths Of An Experiment: The Hawthorne Effect In Schools
Strengths within the experimental method used in the study were that of replication, control, time, ethics and focus. The experiment was easy to replicate with a standardised procedure. We can be assured that each replication of the experiment with all 20 participants went almost identically to one another, due to the predetermined speech given and replicated setup of the classroom and the positioning of each of the experimenters and participants. There was high internal validity within experiment, meaning high levels of control due to precise control of independent variables (independent relating to the age of participants) The experiment was quick and easy, meaning that full attention was given by participants; they did not get tired or show …show more content…
The occurrence of the Hawthorne effect is a weakness within the experiment, the Hawthorne effect being the change in one’s behaviour due to the awareness of being observed. It is likely that participants behaviours were altered due to awareness of being studied under deep scrutiny; participants most likely felt higher levels of discomfort and/or stress due to the knowing of being observed, and because of these potential behavioural alterations, reactions times may have slowed and more mistakes could have been made under the pressure of being …show more content…
All participants attend school regularly, with a routine that is likely to differ very little throughout the week. Experiment was held at school but was entirely different to the routine participants were used to. This could have significantly affected behaviours from participants. The participants behaviours were likely to alter within the experimental setting due to feeling uncomfortable or uneasy about the change in their ordinary routine and the change in attitude given by the experimenters, who at the time were unemotional, and non-talkative, unlike what the experimenters were usually like outside of the experimental conditions. The setup and atmosphere of class was also altered due to the rearrangement of desks and formality of situation, again likely heightening the participants feeling of discomfort and/or unease. The experiment is not mundane, and does not relate to participants regular lives in any way, so respectively we can not assume that results are completely accurate based on the knowledge that reaction times may have changed due to alteration of behaviours and participants potentially not acting as their regular

    The aim of this study was to assess whether Stroop interference did indeed replicate with modern day students. Undergraduate students sample was obtained consisting of 12 females and 6 males, who are students in experimental psychology class. The independent variable was the condition of the stimuli with 3 levels (low, medium and high interference conditions). The dependable variable was the reaction time for the correct responses to the low, medium and high stimuli and the number of errors per condition. A one-way repeated ANOVA resulted in that there was a difference in reaction times and number of errors as the level of interference increased. ATukey’s HSD test found that there was a significant difference between the low and high interference levels and between the medium and high interference levels, as well. Also, there was no significant difference between the low and medium interference levels. That’s why the students didn’t replicate Stroop’s findings. There was a possibility that the sources of interference, like gender effect, auditory and visual distracters influenced the data.…

    While the test subject is in complete control over when the experiment can be stopped based on their own level of morals, it would not be considered proper to put the test subject in an environment like this that could be perceived as “hostile” without their complete knowledge of their part in the experiment.     In social psychology there are many researchers who investigated and challenged different theories within including well respected psychologists including; Sheriff(1935); Jenness(1932); Asch(1951); Crutchfield(1955) and Mann(1969). The aim of the study was; guessing how many sweeties were in the jar in a competition fashion and testing if the participants conformed to their guesses. The hypothesis was ' people would conform under group pressures of the pre-set guesses. The null hypothesis was that people would not conform under group pressures unless due to extraneous variables. The experiment was a field experiment using the techniques of independent groups design. The experiment was dressed as a competition based on the following three conditions; high pre-set; control pre-set and low pre-set guesses. The group used random selection in three math classes with the senior pupils of three different levels (higher, intermediate one and intermediate two). The IV (independent variable) that was used was the pre-set guesses and the DV (dependent variable) was the level of conformity performed by the participants. The conclusion of the results showed that 31.25% of the high pre-set guesses conformed (in the reign of 40+), 23.33% of the low pre-set guesses conformed (in the reign of -30) and 43.48% of the control pre-set guesses conformed (within the reign of 25-45). The breakdown of the analysis for instance the mean of all conditions and overall, the range of all conditions and control(appendix 13). After the group completed the experiment thought was put into how testing conformity could be continued.
