Stan Musial Research Paper
As people have wondered, “Who is, or was, the best baseball player to ever live?” Stan Musial batted over a .331 average in his career ("Encyclopedia Britannica Online"). He also lead the St. Louis Cardinals into 3 World Series titles as MVP (“Wikipedia”). In 2011, he received the Freedom Medal of Honor, one of the highest civilian awards to be given (“Wikipedia”). Stan Musial was one of the greatest baseball players that has been seen to this date, batting with over a .331 average, being voted as MVP over a total of 5 times, and ranking 2nd in NL history.
Although he hit over a .331 batting average (one of the highest to ever be recorded), he had a stance like nobody else (Vecsey). While Babe Ruth had a .342 average, Stan was only .11 away (“Wikipedia”). Babe was one of the best players to ever live, some people say, and for Stan to be only .11 away was …show more content…
He left the sport that was closest to his heart to serve in our country’s Navy to help the lives of many (Vecsey). According to Wikipedia, “In February 2011, President Barack Obama presented Musial with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest civilian awards that can be bestowed on a person by the United States government.” Obama was so dedicated to Musial’s talent that he gifted him, at the age of 91, with the Freedom Medal of Honor. Stan Musial was one of the highest ranked players in the National League history. Although he started his career in the late 1930’s, only 20 years of age, he made it to the major leagues. Given one of the highest Medals of Honor, Stan truly earned it. His achievements will not be forgotten. Yet he was the 2nd ranked player in NL history, and was voted as MVP with a .331 batting average over a total of 5 times. Joe was the eighth child to be born to his parents Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio, who were immigrants from Sicily, Italy who moved to the United States in 1898. Joe’s father and ancestors before him were fisherman; however, Joe never was interested in fishing. Joe did not want to follow his father’s footsteps as a fisherman. So, he decided to go with this brother to San Francisco to play baseball. With Joe deciding to go play baseball Joe became the inspiration to the character, Santiago in the book, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, some say Joe DiMaggio’s childhood was shaped in this line. “I would like to take the great DiMaggio fishing; the old man said, they say his father was a fisherman. Maybe he was as poor as we are and would understand.” (Hemingway 8). As this quote stated that because Joe was raised in a family of fisherman, but didn’t become a fisherman, it showed had determination to follow his dreams. Joe was an inspiration to many.…
