Closing Case Chapter 7 1. Why did both Sony and Toshiba perceive it to be so important to get an early lead in sales?
Based on past format wars, the trend had been “winner takes all.” With that in mind, Sony and Toshiba attempted to get as many early adopters as possible and secure early sales so that more people would recognize and buy their particular format over the other in the future. Whichever company achieved the quickest jump start would see an accelerated demand for its format and hopefully lockout its competition, even though that did not end up being the case for the Sony and Toshiba format wars. 2. What strategies and assets enabled Sony to win the format war?
Sony successfully executed many of the strategies that are needed to win the format war. They beat Toshiba to owning Columbia Pictures, MGM, Disney and Fox Studios, while Toshiba only ended up with Universal Studios committed to HD DVD. Sony continued to implement strategies that would help them sustain the competitive advantage over Sony. They then introduced Blu-Ray to its gaming consoles and laptops. To further increase the supply of Blu-Rays, Sony licensed the format to other consumer electronics firms. By licensing their product to others, it made the Blu-Ray player more available to customers, thus causing companies to make more products in their format. 3. What might Toshiba have done that might have led to a different outcome?

If Toshiba would have been more proactive in attempts to line up film studios to commit to issuing discs for HD DVD and licensed their format at to other electronics firms, they could have seen just as much success as Sony. They limited the sales of the format by preventing it from being easily accessible to customers. Or Toshiba could have done extensive R&D to come out with a gaming console, or other type of electronic device that could be compatible with the HD DVD graphics instead of battling Sony directly in acquiring studio films.

    In the VCR market, although Betamax format of Sony was the technologically superior t VHS formats of JVC, there were still many factors that led to the dominance of VHS over Betamax. Firstly, the recording length is a major factor. Compared with the original Sony Betamax video recorder which could only record for 60 minutes, which is not long enough to record a film. Conversely, VHS of JVC could manage 120 minutes. Apart from this, one more factor is the rental price of VHS is lower.     Massaru Ibuka is the man behind some of the most successful high-tech products that consumers use today. Massaru Ibuka is the founder of Sony. After WWII, he opened up a radio shop and named his company “Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation,” (Sony Corporation, 2008, Introduction section, para. 1) which was then later changed to Sony. “The next year the company changed its name to Sony (from "sonus," Latin for "sound," and "sonny," meaning "little man").” (Sony Corporation, 2008, Introduction section, para. 1) Actually, Massaru wanted to change his company’s name, so that he could market his products to American’s. In order for any of their products to become a house hold name, he understood that they needed to have brand equity among other competitors. Massaru’s plan was to envision a product line that had incredible technological advantages over his competitor’s products. “The goal was to apply various technological innovations that had been developed during the preceding years to the production of new electronic gear for a general audience. Massaru concentrated on the products.” (Rothman, 2001 p.112) Sony has been a key player in the high technology field since the 1960’s when their main product was the transistor radio. Even though these radio’s already existed in the market, people did not see the value in them. Massaru had the vision, and knew how to market the product. After receiving much recognition for their transistor radios, he realized that the transistor radio was in the maturity stage of the product life cycle, and should therefore improve it. He also recognized that rock-n-roll was popular with the young generation at the time, and people needed to have better sounding radios. The new and improved radio (with numerous transistors) made sales skyrocket from only a few hundred thousand units (of old singular transistors) sold, to millions of units sold.
