Teenage accident rates and mortality rates have increased dramatically over the years. Nothing that the parents do and law enforces will protect the teens all the time, especially from themselves. Teenagers do not realize the responsibility that comes with driving. They are often distracted with other things such as texting while driving. Most importantly, parents always worry about the safety of their kids on the road. Some people may say that the driving age should stay at the age of 16; however, raising the driving age to 18 will create safer and more responsible drivers. Firstly, teenagers are very careless. In addition, increasing the minimum driving age will allow teenagers more time to get comfortable with driving. Finally, the number of fatal accidents will be reduced. A study done according to the New York Times shows that when people take their time learning and getting used to driving, they are less likely to get involved in a car accident. A poll was done to compare the difference between those who get their license at 16 and those who get their license later. Those who got their license at the age of 16 replied back saying they were involved in an accident before. Most people who got their license later on responded saying they had not been involved in accidents. Some may argue that training, not age, has the largest effect on the number of teen driving accidents; however, raising the driving age will give teens more time to prepare and more time develop before getting behind the wheel.
