Should Immigrants Enter America
“Three major entry doors exist: a front door for immigrants, a side door for temporary visitors, and a back door for the unauthorized.” (Martin) This quote begins to show the many different ways of entry into the United States, whether legal or illegal. For many different reasons immigrants want to come to the United States, possibly for a chance to start over or a chance at their own “American Dream”. However, many immigrants take advantage of this system. Background checks on immigrants could prevent the assault of current residents, provide easy identification, and determine eligibility to enter the country. For the next test, called a civics test, immigrants must get at least six of the ten questions right. The questions, randomly chosen from a 100 question study guide, concerning government and the history of the United States. (Bray) These tests could determine how much an immigrant currently knows, how easily they could learn, and also their knowledge and tolerability of the American culture. If an immigrant took this test and failed, they would not obtain a work visa or green card. However, if they passed these tests, they could enter the country and start a new life in the United States.
