In completing the Tomato Plant experiment I had to apply the scientific method. I observed that my tomato plants were producing less fruit each year. I then questioned some of the elements that may have affected the tomato plants and caused them to bear fewer tomatoes being a deficiency in warmth, water, or nutrients. I then selected my hypotheses that the plants were in need of more nutrients. Following my hypothesis I developed my prediction which was that my plants would bear more tomatoes if I was to replace the old soil with new soil before planting. I then concluded, based off of the graph depicting the number of tomatoes per plant, that my hypothesis was supported because; my predication was accurate and the plants grew more tomatoes after I had replaced the soil. One of my trucks recently broke down, very suddenly. I used the scientific method to solve my problem, without even realizing it. I observed that my vehicle would not turn over, or start, despite having a full tank. I then questioned what components of the truck could be causing it not to start. I then hypothesized that the engine was not receiving enough fuel. I then created a prediction that if I replaced the O2 sensor my vehicle would start up. So after running a diagnostic and confirming that the O2 sensor was in fact malfunctioning I replaced it. Unfortunately, my hypothesis was not proven correct because, my vehicle still would not start up so I went back to the drawing board and revisited some of possible solutions for why the vehicle might not be receiving enough fuel to operate. I then formulated a new prediction that if I replaced the fuel pump then the engine would receive the fuel it needed to operate. After, replacing the fuel pump I concluded that my hypothesis was supported. My vehicle started right up and has been in perfect working order ever since.

    In performing this experiment, students apprehend and grasp the concept of the “scientific method” and its segments. The scientific method is analytically preceded by researchers to answer a question(s). First, the analyst states the problem based on contemplations. Next, a hypothesis is formed, which means the analyst made an educated guess (solution) to the problem. Before an experiment is performed the analyst has to make a prediction. A prediction is what the person assumes the outcome of the experiment will be, if their hypothesis is precise. When making a prediction it is stated in a manner of “if…..then…” Then the analyst tests the hypothesis. The experiment is manipulated so that changes to one variable cause another to interchange in order to fit your hypothesis. Variables are facts or conditions that are changed. There are three main variables in the scientific method; dependent variable, independent variable and controlled variable. Dependent variable is variables affected by the independent variable. Independent variable is the variables being tested. Controlled variable is variables that remain constant in the experiment. In this experiment five males and five females whose pulse rate and respiratory rate were recorded before and after exercising, to determine cardiovascular fitness with respect to gender. The controlled variables were the environment conditions, same time-span (minutes to exercise) and the same stool.
