School Uniform
"Write an essay in which you look at the issues surrounding school uniform. In your essay you should look at the pros and cons of wearing uniform and end by stating your opinion."

There are many issues surrounding school uniform. Many people believe that wearing uniform increases students behaviour and concentration on the other hand there are a great number of people who believe that wearing school uniform is pointless. I will start with the good points raised by affected people and I will later move onto the negative section of uniform.

The initial costs of purchasing school uniform may seem very high but if you work out the "price per wear" you may realise that this figure is very low. Students also don't have to be worried about what they are going to wear to school the next day and having a uniform means that school pupils have more clothes to wear outside of school. Many pupils will just forget about fashion because everybody is dressed almost exactly the same, this also helps parents of pupils because they also don't have to pay large amounts of money so that their kids can be "cool." Head Teaches may also be relieved at the fact that school uniform has been introduced because of the fact that pupils no longer wear divisive clothing such as football tops or clothes which identify the wearer into one group or culture for example a punk, a goth or a ned. School uniform also stops bullying as all the pupils look the same. Kids from poorer backgrounds have a more equal chance and don't have to strive for the latest designer labels or feel ashamed when people "slag" their clothes.

These are only some of the many good opinions on school uniform, I will now move onto the bad points of uniform to even out the argument.

No person is the same as another so why should anybody be forced to dress the same as everybody else? Also many people at high school are at the age where they want to start dressing to express themselves to their peers. These people do not wish to be forced into wearing a "One size fits all" uniform. Schools should encourage their pupils to be individuals and to express their individuality if that is what they wish to do. Many people feel uncomfortable in uniform because it may not suit the vast array of shapes, sizes and hair colours you see in schools today, this may affect the pupil's attitude to school if the school is making them feel uncomfortable. The last point is, eighteen year old pupils who are at the same school as eleven year olds are being forced to dress the same as the eleven year olds, this may make the older pupils feel as if they aren't being treated like young adults.

I feel that instead of introducing or abolishing school uniform schools should consider compromising. Headmasters may wish to consider introducing a dress code rather than a full school uniform: Any shoes, any trousers as long as they are black and any top with the exception of football tops. This is a much easier way to get all the pros of having a type of uniform without the pupils being too distressed.

In conclusion, my opinion on school uniform is that it is very good at showing the school "in a good light" but I feel that pupils at a school should be allowed to wear what they like as it is their life and they should be allowed to wear what they choose within reason.

Throughout the years, there has been much debate with schools across the country on whether or not students should be allowed to wear uniforms. Through past experience with this argument, it’s safe to say that wearing a uniform is not a bad thing at all. Why? For one, uniforms stop other students from being judged on how they look, two, they save families money and students will not pressure their parents into buying clothes some families can’t afford, and lastly uniforms increase safety and security. So I do strongly agree that students should be able to wear uniforms.…

"Just slapping clothes on kids won't improve a school, but uniforms accompanied by other reforms can make a difference. Uniforms send a message and remind students that they are in school. One element of the message is that when you are going to school, that is your place of work. That is the place where you are working at getting smart." ~Joe Palumbo. Uniforms cause children to be more civilized and mature in what they are doing. It could lead the kids to a greater future and teach them to be more proper. School uniforms are said to be highly beneficial. The case is best stated by Carleton Kendrick Ed.M., LCSW in his article “Reviewing School Uniforms.” “According to proponents of school uniforms, a wealth of potential benefits will follow their adoption: socioeconomic equalization, reduction in student violence and theft (related to clothing), increased attendance, restriction of gang activity, better identification of school intruders, reduction of peer pressure, improved ability to focus in class and better grades” (Kendrick). All good things from both the parents and educator’s viewpoint.…

Even though the argument on whether or not school uniforms takes away the student's right to self-expression will never end. Having school uniforms for the students to wear will eliminate bullies who pick on other students based on their clothing. Uniforms will eliminate the separation of social classes when that is mainly determined by what clothing a person wears. Last but not least, schools that require the students to wear school uniforms makes a formal look on the school. Uniforms may seem boring, but if they are able to help improve learning for students, they are a very reasonable…

Not very many schools around the United States make their students wear uniforms. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, during the 2013-14 school year only fifteen percent of schools required their students to wear uniforms. Some people believe that the use of uniforms will help decrease the amount of bullying and crime in schools. They also believe that by wearing uniforms, students will focus more on their school work instead of their clothes. On the other hand, I believe that the use of school uniforms limits a student's freedom to express themselves. Also, I believe school uniforms don’t help the amount of bullying, it could even make it worse if someone can’t afford a uniform. Lastly,…

A bulletin published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals stated that "When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork." School uniforms would not work out as well as not having them, people would all look the same, and no one would be happy except for the few who enjoy not having creativity. Whereas, the people who don’t like school uniforms, which would probably be more people than those who like school uniforms, will be happier and more content without them. It is true that if you have school uniforms then no one can bully you about the articles of clothing you wear and so people will not feel devastated inside. If you are forced to wear uniforms then you will probably not have a very happy life in school, and if people aren’t happy in school then they probably will not do as well in their studies. However, as stated previously, school is a place to learn not, not to show off your clothing line and your personal swagger. Clothes don’t pick who you are, wearing the uniforms will show that they are all equal and that no one is better than the other one. So, I believe that wearing the uniforms will beneficial to the school, students and parents. Society must decide if individual expression through clothing is more important than education performance being improved because of uniforms being implemented into the school system. Parents and students should remember that uniforms may be required during school hours. After school students can express their individuality in a way, they dress outside of the…
