FRAMEWORKS FOR CARE

INTRODUCTION

I have noticed nowadays that reflective practice does play a major role in the nursing field. It is not just a personal opinion as,(Teekman 2000,pg 1125-1135) states that reflective practice is becoming an essential element of nurse education as professional nursing bodies world wide are being impressed by literature on learning by reflection. It is nearly the same conclusion that is brought by Boud, Keogh and Walker(1987,pg 11) and this is proof as well that reflective practice isn 't a new concept. It is so, as they traced similar ideas back to Aristoles writings on practical judgement and moral actions. Reflective practice is a system that clarifies everything. I believed that every person is entitled to a good standard of care and no one should be left to endure unbearable pain. I tried to ensure that Stephen 's pain was relieved as quickly as possible.

EMPIRICS

WHAT KNOWLEDGE INFORMED ME?

I knew that Stephen 's clip were going to be removed at the bottom of the wound sooner or later so as to help the liquids clear out. It was very uncomfortable though that it happened in a painful way. I got to know also that a daily dressing had to be done on the wound and I was the one doing it under the supervision of the junior sister.

REFLEXIVITY

HOW DOES THIS CONNECT WITH PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES?

It is frequent to have nurses not rushing to some calls, thinking that it is not important. It is also common to see doctors not impressed by everything. They sometimes consider those events as being very minor incidents.

COULD I HANDLE THIS SITUATION IN A BETTER WAY NEXT TIME?

I assume yes but I reckon I did the right thing on the moment. I acted quickly but very safely. I helped then asked for support, which is a good sign of own initiative. There is still way for improvement though and I am still trying to assess what could be the best thing to

    In this reflection, I have utilized Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This cyclical model is a recognized framework to assist with a critical reflection on practice. I chose to use this cycle because it will improve my nursing practice continuously, and learning from the experience for better and improved practice. Gibbs (1988) reflective model consists of six stages. Boyd and Fales (1983) offer a useful definition of reflection, suggesting that it is “the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, and which results in a changed conceptual perspective.” According to Siviter, 2004, p165) explains that reflection is about gaining self-confidence, identifying when to improve, learning from own mistakes and behaviours, looking at other people’s perspective, being self aware and improving the future by from the past.     In this essay, I am going to give a structured reflective account on the development of a therapeutic relationship with a client on one of my clinical placements as part of my training as a student nurse. I will be using a reflective model which explores the processes involved in developing and maintaining such relationships bearing in mind theoretical knowledge and how it applies to this clinical experience.
