I will discuss a clinical skill that I have been practicing by using a reflective model. Reflection is defined as being ‘an active process of witnessing one’s own experience in order to take a closer look and explore it in depth’ (Johns, C. 2005). The Nursing and Midwifery Council believe that all students should undertake the art of reflection as part of their training, in order to become a competent nurse, (NMC, 2010).
Reflective practice is used so that the student can make the connection between the theory and the practical. Reflections are used to make a starting point for our learning. By thinking about a specific situation using the reflective process, we can begin to understand them differently and take action as required (Jasper, M. 2003).
In this assignment I will be using the Gibbs model of reflection (1988). Gibbs model incorporates the following: Description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan. This model will help me to critically think so that I can relate theory to practice where the model allows. To conclude the assignment, I will discuss how effective my reflective skills are and show my personal and professional development.
The clinical skill I have chosen to reflect on is basic life support (BLS), as this may have to be used at any time and any place in the case of an accident. BLS is a level of medical care used in emergency, life-threatening situations until the victim can be cared for professionally by a team of paramedics or at a hospital (TutorCare, 2011).
The first stage of Gibbs (1988) model of reflection requires a description of events. As part of getting ready for our practice learning opportunity, we had to complete basic life support training. This took place in a clinical suite with other students from my cohort. After being given a verbal description on how to carry out the skill, we then observed it being done on a realistic doll and then were allowed to practice ourselves. We were talked through
