Nursing Reflective Analysis
For my finial reflection I have decided to reflect on the reflective practice itself and my abilities to practice reflection, as it appears I am having some issues with the process. After receiving an A- on my last reflection, I spoke with my Faculty Advisor (FA) with the intention of discovering why I was not achieving marks in the A+ range on my reflections, and what I need to work on to improve on the quality of my reflections. Her feedback was that I was too broad in my approach; I spend too much time discussing the event and did not go into enough depth in my reflective analysis. I hope and anticipate that this reflection will be better; as I hope to demonstrate a deeper analysis of the issue and techniques I can use to improve my skills.

(Caldwell & Grobbel, 2013, pg. 322) A study conducted by Chirema (2006) examined two different types of reflective practice used by nursing students; journaling and group discussion. While most students preferred journaling, it was discovered that some found journal writing difficult, and that they would prefer to discuss the issues, instead of writing about them. These students found that discussion with their preceptors and peers was more “constructive and easier then writing reflections.”(Caldwell & Grobbel, 2013, pg. 322) I completely identify with these finding and feel that I would benefit from discussing the issues, with colleagues, in addition to writing formal reflective journals. Elmqvist, Fridlund, and Ekebergh (2012) also found that incorporating group reflection into the reflection process in addition to the reflective journals is particularly important and beneficial.     In this reflection, I have utilized Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This cyclical model is a recognized framework to assist with a critical reflection on practice. I chose to use this cycle because it will improve my nursing practice continuously, and learning from the experience for better and improved practice.     I enjoyed reading your post and found it extremely interesting. I have also found it interesting how many different opinions were posted. I believe you made some really good points. However, I had a different opinion than you, I thought that the research approach was applied, as it was attempting to solve the nursing shortage issue by finding why some nurses persevere through completion through the nursing programs and other do not succeed as well.     The position of a manager is a foreign occupation to me. I have worked as a charge nurse for about 3 years but to be manager has always seemed overwhelming to me. I have to the opportunity to precept with Wayne Martin, who is currently the manager over the Emergency Department at Southeastern Health. He is also managing the MedCare Unit which is a critical care transport team for the hospital. To begin the morning, we started with a financial meeting with different departments such as the IT department and different business departments.     INTRODUCTION In the era of evidence based practice and knowledge-driven healthcare, nurses are constantly challenged to discover new and better ways of delivering care. Thus, journaling and reflective practice becomes an important tool in Nursing Practice. Reflective writing through keeping a journal allows nurses to become more sensitive observers and encourages enquiry which focuses on the roles as well as direction of nursing (Holly, 1987). Through this professional journal writing, I discovered the value of the reflective process. This process has changed my feelings, belief and assumption in enhancing holistic care to my patients, peers and even for my family. Atkins (1995, pp.32) supports this by saying that “reflective writing is the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern triggered by an experience which created and clarifies, meaning in forms of self”. I used four methods of seeing to demonstrate my level of understanding namely, literal, lateral, critical and speculative. By critically analyzing the nursing articles, I have developed a greater understanding about nursing, especially about my own practice within the nursing discipline. Reflecting on the practice based description in the professional journal which I maintained over my career, I have discovered a number of emergent themes relevant to ways of knowing and the empirical, interpretive and critical paradigms. In order to comprehensively explain and analyze my ideas, I have used headings entitled Describing, Informing, Challenging and Reconstructing. DESCRIBING I have used the tenants of Benner (1984, 2000, and 2001) to form the eclectic conceptual framework. Specifically, Benner’s work on Novice to Expert (1984) provides me useful descriptions to describe my four practice descriptions.
