Reflective Essay: My History Of Literacy
My History of Literacy Writing papers has always been something I would try to avoid. It is time consuming and challenging to write a paper worthy of a high grade. When English Composition 1 started, the time consumption and challenge escalated tremendously. My successes and failures became visible to me throughout this course. I found many high points, more low points, and overcame difficulties I did not think I would be able to overcome. The high points of English classes I have always taken do not appear to me until the class is over. As I reflect over Comp. 1, I had many high points. Writing a paper was always a struggle to me in the past. The teachers would always tell me to just figure it out, and do the best you can. I had the privilege

When it comes to writing papers, I usually have a difficult time getting started. I sometimes have trouble with certain topics, getting the general concept, and then turning it into a writing that will get my point across. I feel as if I’m not very creative with my words as I should be without sounding so scattered brained and lost. I was a little nervous when entering English 1102, after having such a difficult time in English 1101 online. At first I did feel at ease but once we got to doing research on a particular food and the articles, I did have some challenging moments. In in the end I did pull my works together and I plan on sharing some of my reflections while taking a look back on a couple of my papers.…

On past exams, we had to write an essay in one hour, which was quite a challenging task. Using ACE paragraphs helped me learn how to write a well written response to an article or prompt. It taught me how to use supporting details to prove my statement. The newspaper project for ¨And Then There Were None” helped me think for creatively and add in some different articles that made the project better. My writing composition has improved tremendously after these…

Early childhood literacy experiences can contribute heavily on a child’s early successes and difficulties once they reach formal schooling. Early literacy experiences can really put a kid in front and be more ready once they start school. Parents play an important part to this as they control a lot of a child’s early experiences with literacy. The culture of where kids grow up also can either benefit a kid’s literacy or it can put the kids behind other students. These experiences can be the differences of a kid passing his early English courses or failing them.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Literacy, as described by Melzer and Coxwell, is not exclusive to the written prose. Literacy is rather an expression of ideas and beliefs which could be conveyed in writing but could also be displayed through other types of media such as in photos, music and even film. Literacy is an art of expression and rather than being written it is composed. Thus, in this unit I have accrued many experiences in which I have composed a piece (although I transferred midway through). On the first day in this class, we had just begun the podcast unit. I remember my first assignment being to listen to podcasts and review them. At first I questioned the purpose of the assignment; I had known the final goal was to produce a podcast but, I never knew why we were…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

When you hear the word literacy what comes to mind? Do you think of words or school or horrible comprehension tests? When I hear the word literacy none of the above is what comes to my mind. I think of when I was young, no more than five, and I would sit on my grandmother’s warm lap wrapped up in her arms that seemed to protect me from any and everything while she read to me. I think of the struggle and the many trials it took to spell and write my own name, but also relishing in the sense of accomplishment I felt. I think of the times I read along to books my mother would read to my sisters and me until I could read them on my own. Finally, I think of the smiles and proud looks on my parents’ and grandparents’ faces when ever I would show…
