Reflective Essay: What I Learned In My Writing Class
One of my true struggles in life, was writing. I was very nervous about starting this class. In high school I had straight A’s in every class except, English. English class was always a struggle for me growing up. My brake through was my senior year. I had a great teacher that took her time to guide me in the right direction. What she taught me helped me with getting through this course. This course was still very difficult for me but still enjoyable. The most difficult part for me was writing the self in context essay. It was the first essay making it hard to write. The hardest part about it, was writing about my father. It was difficult for me to write while I was emotional. I feel writing while I was emotional made my essay strong. Writing the essay about my father also helped me with my …show more content…
For some reason I found the reportage essay easier for me to write. At first I found myself irritated with the fact I had to get out of my comfort zone and go to an event. Once I arrived at the event I picked I was thankful because I was getting involved with my community. I feel like going to the event was the most difficult part for me. I’m a quit person making things hard. I was forced to step out of my comfort zone and open up to other people. When I sat down to write my paper I felt more confident in myself. Having confidents helped me write my paper better and stronger. I’m very thankful that every essay I wrote in this class has helped me. I enjoyed that these three papers were able to make me a stronger writer. The self in context essay I was able to learn how to express my emotions in writing. Most importantly writing the essay I realized that I have been keeping my emotions hidden. The lyrical essay got me to start thinking about writing poems again. Lastly the reportage essay forced me to step out of my comfort zone and have some fun. I am very thankful for this

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

By utilizing four steps, I can effectively write an essay on the topics assigned during this program (Bethel, 2015). The first step is developing a clear point and is followed by supporting ideas. I plan to use quick notes to get my ideas down and make sure I need them. Next I need to organize my ideas to explain how I arrived at my thesis. Finally, I need to proofread my writing to omit any grammar or writing mistakes. These steps can help my writing be more concise and improve over time.…

Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

I think that now I write papers more structured and organized rather than throwing all of my ideas down on the paper. In the future, I think that I will seek feedback by asking a friend to proof read my work or by going to the ask center for help after I have read it aloud several times. If I need more feedback I could talk to my professor and see what his expectations are and what I can improve on. Overall, the experience that I had with all of my proof reading and feedback resources was positive. I think that I have learned more about my habits, which have helped me improve my writing skills in…

We had to write from narrative essays, to persuasive essays, to argumentative to reflective essays. This course expanded my knowledge of how to write different kinds of essays because each type of essay has to be written in a certain way with a certain tone. For instance, in my persuasive in class essay Without a Saddle, I had to persuade the audience that youth learn either through experience or promoting cautiousness through restrictions. I thought I was good at writing persuasive essays before but now I learned how to persuade so that the audience can understand my point of view. And after understanding what Professor Anderson is trying to tell me, I revised my paper into a well developed essay. I have noticed that I developed a better and a not so broad thesis, and I have clear transition sentences. That makes the reader understand what is going on and to keep the reader…

I have learned to not take things at face value, to do my own research and even though I am not yet able to do it I am trying to not let my own opinions taint produce too big of a bias. Furthermore, I need to work on rereading my working, to smooth the kinks of awkward phrasing, fragments and overall grammatical errors. There really is no reason for multiple surface level errors and just taking that extra time will increase the fluidity of the work. I learned the value of rough drafts and working through multiple drafts. I was able to write in a more effective manner, organize my ideas and tap into my full potential on being able to articulate my thoughts. It forced me to completely breakdown the essay, not focus on it whole and break it down into paragraph level and even sentence level. It became frustrating at times who thoroughly go through each paragraph, identify its themes and make sure it corresponded to the thesis of the paper. Paired with my reviewing of my own work, I found the strengths of peer reviewing others and being peer reviewed as well. Also, the worth of a well-constructed thesis was learned as it acts as the foundation and framework for the paper. I often found it difficult staying on task while writing because there were times when I found myself inevitably floating off and getting on tangents because there were so many…

However the class I took in eighth grade renewed my confidence and inspiration and I consider that class to be the best experience I’ve had in any English class so…

Writing an essay can be a very challenging process for any college student. This semester in my English writing class I have learned how to use writing guides and step by step strategies to write an efficient essay. Some of the key points to writing that I have refined are producing a strong introduction with a thesis statement. Other areas of writing an essay that I have become more proficient at are constructing the essay with illustration and supporting ideas, citing the sources in proper Modern Language Association (MLA) format, concluding the essay, and proofreading the essay. “There is no one correct way to write an essay. However, there are better and worse ways” (Blum 12). Although writing an essay takes time and is difficult, I think that by applying proper methods of writing a student can be successful.…

Essay writing was a major part of the class. We wrote essay on processed food and gun control, and gay matters. Each essay taught us about a different style or form of writing. I can honestly say my essay skills have improved tremendously over the course of this year thanks to the many skills learned in this class ; however, I do feel I need more practice in timed essay. We read our peers essays, correct the grammatical errors, gave suggestions to word placement, and sentence usage. Reviewing and correctional skills learned will be very helpful in the future as we continue to write essays during college. Seeing other people correct my essays helped me view my essays from different viewpoints. Sometimes letting someone else read your paper can help you come up with an idea to use in your paper that you might not have noticed before.…
