Reflective Essay: How A Medical Education Changed My Life
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to go to college and had hopes to become a college graduate one day. When I was 17, my mother left California and I was forced to finish high school on my own as well as support myself financially. So I got a job and graduated high school. Upon receiving my high school diploma, I was left with an unsettling feeling of uncertainty with regards to my accomplishments and future. I knew I needed more than a high school diploma to achieve the goals I so desperately wanted and the obstacles I felt I had to overcome.
During Fall Semester 2016 I had complications regarding my mental health. I lost my medical insurance so I was no longer able to take the medication I needed for my clinical anxiety, depression, and

So i made the decision to take the summer off from school to focus on getting my life back together. I met with WIND, the homeless youth foundation and met with a counselor. He provided me with many outlets and programs to ensure my security in the future. I have also taken the Satisfactory Academic Progress Workshop and met with a Financial Aid representative who provided me a list of places and programs I can go to for assistance. In addition, I now have my medical insurance back so, as of the month of August, I can get the proper medication I need to keep my mental health under control. Also, i have a new job at Khols which provides me the income i need for basic necessities while being flexable with my school schedule. I have saved enough of my wages to also rent a private bedroom. I was put in a bad place, but in a short amount of time I have turned my situation around completely. I have enrolled in 10 units (3 classes) and am aware that, if approved, I must complete at least half of them (per the Dismissal requirements) to not be put on Dismissal again. I have worked very hard to get my life back on track, and will continue to do so as the semester unfolds. Thank you for your

During my time in high school, both inside and outside of school, I often had the reoccurring thoughts of a necessity to go somewhere with my life. During my senior year of high school I began to realize as any young man that comes to that part of life that I was about to begin to make choices on their own for the first time. I was the first in my family to be getting an education past high school and the pressure was on me to further my studies and like the son of immigrant workers I was expected to go above and beyond the point where my parents arrived. I was all for going to school and getting a degree but then reality struck and I had to begin to think of ways of paying…

The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…

When people hear “pre-medicine,” they think of majors like biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, health sciences, and other popular majors. I chose chemistry as my major, not only because I wanted to stand out not blend in, but also because I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have always performed better in chemistry than in biology. I prefer challenges and I love the way chemistry challenges me. I am going into freshmen year with the knowledge of the level of difficulty that my major encompasses. I need to remain focused and work hard in order to succeed and achieve a solid gap of at least 3.6 for admission to medical school.…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

The abilities an individual possesses are an accumulation of their previous life experiences and the various competences which have been practiced for many years. Often times, these skills are overlooked and taken for granted as we never actually think about them in terms of their effect on our potential career choices. After thinking about my personal skills, I compiled a list which included; communication, cooperation, patience, listening, helping others and perseverance; all skills which I have possessed for majority of my lifetime and have used to overcome many challenges. One example in particular which required me to draw on many of these skills, was fairly recently; I am a dance instructor for children ages four to seven and there was a young boy who joined the class later than the rest of the students. I noticed that he was struggling…

As a child, I never thought I would be the one who would graduate from high school. In grade school, I learned that I could do well, but I was afraid of going to a higher level. As a freshman in high school, I made a decision to be a fool and drop out. In that time many of my family members had gotten sick over the course of a few months. I spent much time in the hospital and watching the nurses come in and out of the room and got me thinking I could do something like that. The next school year started and I decided to go back to school. I now had a goal. I explained my goals to my family but the only one who had faith in me was my father.…
