Application Essay: My Journey To Medical School
The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in …show more content…
In addition, my employment experience has provided me with great respect for social and ethical views that differ from my own. This position has given me the opportunity to decide if a career in medicine is truly where I would like to be. Working at the hospital has been a truly challenging experience through dealing with the magnitude of death, illness, and recovery. This experience has made me realize that a career in medicine is where I need to be. I have experienced a multitude of emotions and in the end I have realized that the reward of knowing that a life was saved or that through the death of a patient, we have made groundbreaking discoveries in medicine is far greater than the emotional tensity associated with the experience.
My work experience and scholarly achievements have prepared me for the long haul. I am committed and prepared to embark on my journey into the study of medicine. My hopes are to apply everything I have learned along the way to my study of medicine in an effort to become a medical student you are proud to have attending your

Attending medical school was my lifelong dream, but attending the University of Maryland School of Medicine has been so important that that I have been preparing for it since I started going to college. Getting in to medical school requires an outstanding academic excellence and other extracurricular activities, and I as well as other premedical students work very hard to attend one, but many of us do not know what the life of a particular medical student looks like. Medical students undergo the most rigorous and exhaustive educational training for as long as 10 years.…

There is a common misconception about pre-medical students that once they step foot on campus, they must give up all the fun activities not directly related to medical school preparation. According to this viewpoint, students must replace their hobbies with studying, volunteering, and research in their free time. While compromises must be made by any college student, this perspective is largely inaccurate and does not truthfully reflect a happy, successful pre-med student. A successful student is one who balances their schoolwork and medical school preparation with pursuing their own personal interests and having fun outside of school.…

Personal Statement “Gracias Doctor,” she said to me and smiled. I quickly tried explaining my role as a medical student in accordance to the hierarchy before she abruptly interjected in a disapproved tone, humbly saying, “You are a very good human being which makes you a very caring doctor.” I didn’t quite understand it at first since I was just in my first year of medical school taking her vitals at the university clinic. However, as the years pass and I was given more responsibilities on the care team, the same sentiments resonated amongst subsequent patients I was caring for. I always aspired to become a doctor, so given the opportunity to attend medical school became a privilege that I must have projected on to them with my outward joy.…

“To go forward you have to come back to where you began.” So much has changed since that warm summer night when I read the last pieces of advice Cal had to offer. Often my personal self feels like a collection of different pieces – the me from the border, the me as next of kin, the me rediscovering hope, perhaps even the me of the future. Being a doctor encompasses much more than just technical skill and amassing information. It is an outlook, a passion, a question and state of mind. My experiences have taught me that without a genuine drive to change people’s lives and the courage to stand tall in the face of uncertainty, even the best academic is just a mediocre physician. A social worker once told me, “A career in medicine is what you make…

My decision to pursue medicine has not arisen from an epiphany or childhood dream, but is one I have come to after careful consideration. My interest stems from the science behind the biological processes in human bodies and I have relished the chance to explore them further in my AS Levels, from carcinogenic free radicals in Chemistry, to the impact of diet on cardiovascular disease in Biology. I have also striven to develop my understanding beyond the curriculum, such as by reading articles in 'The Lancet' on the obesity epidemic. The opportunity that medicine provides to combine a caring nature with scientific interest drives me to pursue this career. To experience the challenges of a medical career, I arranged placements in a paediatric department, a Child Development Clinic and a health trainer programme.…

My family’s unfortunate situation left me feeling out of control of my future, but hard work was something I could control. I meticulously planned my every step, prioritizing each stride in pursuit of medical school. In one short year, I have managed to complete all my academic prerequisites and perform especially well in my biology, biochemistry and physics courses. I have enhanced my clinical experience through shadowing and my involvement in an exercise physiology lab where I was able to help participants better their health and lifestyles. Regardless of the costs, including giving up my summer break to complete my biology requirements, dedicating every day of my winter break to preparations for the MCAT, spending the early mornings monitoring heart rates of participants in the lab and always spending that extra night of studying, refusing to leave anything to chance, I was dedicated to my goal. I used to believe being hard working was a sign of weakness, but now I believe it is my greatest…

The Medical School rotation took place at Graves Hall, or 333 W. 10th Avenue, Columbus, OH 43210, in room 187. There, we learned from Dr. Georgia Paletta (whose email we were not given) that the mission statement of the Ohio State University College of Medicine was to improve people’s lives through innovation in research, education and patient care. There, a new curriculum has been put into place, exposing the students to many real life scenarios and valuable patient interactions. During the talk about their school, applications, and preparations, Dr. Georgia Patella and four medical students imparted various insightful stories about their experiences.…

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” In life, we are faced with many situations that cause us to have to make decisions. The easiest thing to do isn’t always the right; the right thing isn’t necessarily the easiest. Sometimes we have to make the right choices on our own without any influence. Going to college was the best decision I ever made. Of course I could have taken the easy way out and not attend college, but if I had taken that option, I know that I would not be able to have the lifestyle that I want. I chose to go college so I can have a career, make my family proud, and be a great role model for my children.…

Life is an interesting journey full of unforeseen situations that can alter our initial plans. During my years in high school my parents always reminded me of the importance of aspiring to be the best I could be and, as a result, I would be able to accomplish anything. I was the recipient of many scholarships and awards and was part of many extracurricular activities as well. I even made time for my new job at Walgreens as a beauty advisor.
